How do I subscribe to a message so I can see the follow up answers?

do you mean a thread? I think you need to reply to the specific thread to be 'updated'

Near the top of the page, just above the opening post to the thread, there is a link called "Thread Tools". If you click on that link a popdown menu comes up and in the list of options is Subscribe to Thread. Click on that and follow the instructions. Also, any time you post to or start a thread, you are automatically subscribed.

Only if that's the option you selected in your User Profile. You can turn that feature off so you don't subscribe to every thread you post to.
