Default Retire This Trend for 2019!

Let's face it. If one company comes out with a unique image, then you will soon see that image everywhere! Not just stamp companies, but retailers, too. It saturates the market until we move on to the next thing. (Remember the mustache trend? ugh!

I thought it might be fun to tell stamp companies here what we are tired of seeing. Maybe we can generate some fresh ideas!

Here's what I'd like to see retired for 2019!

*Unicorns
*Mermaids and Mermen
*Llamas
*Sloths
*Rainbows
*Flamingos
*Text-speak letter abbreviations
*Koalas

What trend would you like to see the end of in 2019?

I've never been a fan of unicorns and mermaids. I have 5 granddaughters, ages 5 to 10, and they don't really like them either (except for the movie Little Mermaid).

I do love sloths and koalas, though! ;-o

Poop Emojis. Emojis in general too.
I will take all the unicorns, mermaids, rainbows and zoo animals over these two any day.

I vote with Embri, no more of the poop stuff. I can't believe people are buying that crap! I can't believe it is even the theme for birthday parties. What will that say about us as a society ten years from now?? There is even a gross game that is out. Glorifying pooh, have we gone nuts????

Yes the puns! Surely they must be out of fad animals by now. Maybe rats and snakes next year. They haven’t used those much yet.

Decided to do a little research on unicorns hoping to discover the fascination with them. Here’s what I found. I’ll spare you all the reason why, but I’m appalled! Down with unicorns!!!
Unicorns are strongly associated with the feminine and as such have traditionally appeared as a symbol of chastity, the divine power that nurtures all living things, and an emblem of the word of divine presence. This is why it is often said that only a virgin can catch a unicorn.Mar 14, 2017

I must admit to deliberately avoiding the 'in' thing, both in crafting and in life in general. Even if I like a subject- owls is the only fad I can think of that I liked- I don't get into it. Never been a 'fashion' person at all. I just feel that I craft to make things that are different from what I could go out and buy, not to emulate it.

I get tired of seeing the same designs everywhere. No more cutesy woodland creatures, please. The latest round of new things heavily feature butterflies. Everywhere. Pretty, but I did butterflies in the late '90s and I'm over it.

I'm tired of new stamp releases every month, and then all the videos using the same sets. Then, in a few weeks, no one is featuring those anymore, and the new line is released. I know it's how stamp companies stay in business, but it was so much easier when companies had only 2 or 3 releases a year. Now it's just too overwhelming.

I think the more spaced out releases also allowed for more creativity. Ideas could percolate and be inspired by what others did. Less frequent releases also made it SO exciting!

Personally I am already sick of the big headed animals and kid images. My in-box with postings from stampers blogs is flooded with these goofy images. I suppose they are intended to be cute and different, but to my eye they just look dorky. Am I the only one who is already sick of this trend or am I so far out of the loop that I should shut up and crawl back under my rock?

I was going to mention butterflies, but those already made the list.

I'll add cupcakes. I saw the new Occasions catalog tonight and yep, there's another cupcake.

I'll also add a variation on Scrapjanny's post: bloggers who only post when they're advertising a new product they got for free (and then never use that product again).

ALL the cutesy, cartoonish, animals and children. I don't make cards for 6 yr olds, so I am not interested in the big-headed, big eyed creatures.
I can't imagine that poop ever made it into print, let alone a stamp! Isn't our goal to encourage, cheer or comfort recipients?

I do make a few cards for six year olds but I tend to choose whimsical images and some nicely rendered animals, not these big headed, bug eyed, badly drawn ones. This last year there has been a glut of that stuff. If you have to have poop stamps just use the tops of some of those two piece cupcake stamp sets. Have you ever noticed the similarity? It’s why I don’t buy cupcake anything.

I think just too many releases. The quality has definitely dropped, even with the florals.

This is how I feel about the digital stamps and acrylic ones. Another vote against the poo ones! And dragons, kids without faces or smiles (the large kid ones also), sentiments that are curse words or in bad taste (who can I send these to; really?), sinister looking ones and Santa ones.
I actually like cutesy ones, and I'm not big on trends. I just like what I like.

The more I think about it I guess it’s whatever people like and I’m not the stamp design police but I just seem to be deleting the blogs I sub to before I even get to the bottom of the post. Critters day after day from some of my favorite designers because that’s what a lot of the companies are featuring.

I never liked the trend of filling in the inside of the letters on a font...like the circle in the letters b, a, o, d, g etc. Just when I think it’s over, it shows up again on a new stamp set.

I really liked the Stampin Up set that looked like a painting of mountains and water. ( I forget what it’s called.). I’d love another outdoor scene like that.

I think the set you are referring to is SU Waterfront. It was a whole set of stamps that allowed you to create mountain and beach scenes that looked like watercolor. And you could use many of the stamps for purposes other than what was intended. This was an amazing set because it allowed the stamper to create something unique with the set.
I totally agree with you, we need to see more of this kind of set! I am still using and loving Waterfront....in fact I left each one of the stamps on a custom sized acrylic block and put them in a new box to keep them together. I was using the set so much that I was wasting time with placement/removal of the stamps on the blocks and it was just easier to leave them mounted and ready to use!

Great topic!
While I love cute critter stamps (I will never quit using Penny Black cute animal stamps), there are sooo many critter stamps out now and to me many of them look so much alike that I have a hard time telling from what company they are.

Also, dies that match stamps. Some are useful, but many of them are more of a hassle to die cut with than to quickly cut by hand. And then I feel with all the matching dies, so many cards look alike.

Poop stamps? Wow, I never did see any of those, thank goodness!

Penny Blacks critter stamps are in a category of their own. They are cute and fun without being cutsie. In my mind they are what I would consider timeless and classic - 10 years from now they will still stand out as unique and distinctive still useable. Her designs are on the order of the old style PSX stamps (but new and fresh!). The PSX stamps are much desired now because people realize how timeless and special their designs were. Just my thoughts on differences between cute and cutsie!

I would love to see more "build-a-scene" stamps, with examples of cards that are easy to create. Step-by-step directions would be helpful too, even if you had to go to the company's website or YouTube channel for them.

Yes, I love when a company easily illustrates the stamp process or uses for the set. Concord and 9th does a great job of this.

It would be awesome is scenic stamping became a trend again!

Koala's are/were a trend? Well dang I have a large wood mounted Koala stamp I could have dusted off to use again.

I don't have a specific "theme" that I'm tired of, but I'm sick to death of stamps that are poorly drawn and fonts that I could do better just winging it myself. Why spend money on something you could do as well or better? I buy stamps that offer something that I am unable to attempt on my own...

I also agree (and have felt like this for years now) about the frequency of "new releases". Every month? Really? How can you possibly build enough anticipation and desire for that release when it's a flash in the pan, only to be superceded by next month's release? I find that I'm using my older stamps more and prowling auction sites for stamps circa 2003-2004, myself. There are a few newer releases that I will follow - Stacey Yacula at Purple Onion (also 2 sets at MFT now), for example. Hers are more seasonal than monthly, though. A better plan, in my opinion...

Totally sick of:
-unicorns
-emojis
-llamas
-deer (especially just the heads)
-cactus for every season
-sloths
-coffee
-elaborate caligraphy sentiments

I do hope the cute food with faces never goes out of style though!
Trends i predict to continue for 2019...
-mandalas
-earth/globes
-flamingos
- crafty themed stamps

I actually like the food faces too and collect vegetable stamps for stamping tags for food gifts.

One company put out a deer head stamp this year with big zombie eyes. Totally scary. I’m not sure what occasion works with a sloth image, belated birthday maybe. A lot of stampers must like these images though because they keep making more of them. Saves me money because I’m not tempted.

I have enjoyed reading this thread. I've felt the same way many of you do...who needs to buy it all from any one of the companies...at a price of $175 or more. Who does that? Who would want to do that every month?

As for me, I like the odd. I like to combine sentiment, quotes, and images with each other that don't fit. That's the craft of bringing them all together in a pleasing way. I recently 'aquired' the last of a series of stamps based on a card illustrator I adore. It took me years to finally get it off the 'bay.

Thanks for reading. Keep it up.

I dislike inanimate items given eyes and mouths, for example vegetables. Sorry I know some of you have just said you love them, but they creep me out.

I, too, would love to see more EASY scene-building sets like SU's Waterfront. Rubbernecker did a great one, too, called Open Range.

I've stopped looking at some companies' releases because every one of them looks the same: super simple, cutesy animals and kids in just a slightly different seasonal setting. How many sets of the same type of characters can one person use?

Scenic sets - we are lucky in the UK to have companies like Card-io and Hobby Art who produce super sets like this. Other than that, I will not comment, as I never see any new releases to know what's trendy or not! I hate, absolutely hate cutesy, always have, and have very few 'animate' stamps - a few birds and butterflies/dragonflies and one or two animals. Other than that, I'm happy using one or more stamps to create the look I want.

I’m usually not a trendy girl, as some of you said about yourselves. So, I ignore a lot of what is in the stores these days, as well as the trendy companies online. Scenic stamping is still alive and well. Let these folks knock your socks off: https://www.facebook.com/groups/342876996197261/ . The group focuses on stamps by Stampscapes, but many people also incorperate other companies’ stamps as well. Another great source for stamping beyond the trends is Rubber Stamp Madness magazine. They also list stamp companies, most of which are following the beat of a different drum. RSM has a website worth visiting at: http://www.rsmadness.com/ . Have fun exploring!

Stacy, I missed the Koalas, too. One or two could be a good addition to my collection.

I would really appreciate some humorous stamps. My mother and other family members love sassy stamp themes. However, we seem to get the same old sentiments, and few sets that mimic the humorous cards found in stores
