I am looking at ordering a small stamp set for $1.25 (free shipping) from Hong Kong (to USA) and am reading general info on the site about being prepared to pay for extras. I did find a duty calculator website that says I won't have to pay import duty, merchandise processing fee or taxes. But I also read that I should call my post office about answers to avoid unpleasant surprises. I did call and the woman seemed to guess that there would be no other charges, but that if there were, they would be collected as "postage due".
We do order photos from Hong Kong and never had to worry.
Does anyone have experience with this? Is it really a simple thing after all?
Thanks for being here to answer hard questions!
My first reaction was that this must be some special stamp set . I ordered toys from Manila once!!! Oh my goodness - I do understand the "gotta have it" sort of thing that comes along now and then.
I have no practical experience to share and no advice to give although I can't imagine there could be very much along the lines of "extra charges" for such an inexpensive purchase with free shipping.
But I am so curious! What is this special stamp set?!
I do believe that in the USA shipments with a value under $100 (in some cases $200)will be duty/tax free (https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/det...%20mail%20duty)
In Canada we are not so lucky, it caps at a mere $20.00 (unless it slips through unnoticed)
I have purchase various items through eBay from Hong Kong, China and Thailand. Just be forewarned that the shipping time can vary greatly. I have had items arrive within 1 week and other's have taken up to 6 weeks.
seconding punch crazy- shipping times can vary wildly. But I doubt very much that your purchase will incur any extra charges- that one wouldn't incur any here in the Uk, and our 'limit' is a ridiculous 15!
Thanks for your replies! It is not a "special" stamp set, just something that ebay had me notice while looking at something, you know how that happens.
Here it is:
Yes, I am grateful to live in the USA and have so much good shopping and I have empathy for others. The description says that the shipping takes time, but that is fine with me. As long as it's faster than the 7 months that Scrapbooking Made Simple took to complete my order!
Oooh!!! Very pretty!! I can see wanting to scoop those up (and I X-ed out before I started browsing, lol). I love that style of stamp for using with polymer clay. Hope you get them quickly!
I've ordered a few things from HK and like others have said, the shipping varies quite a bit. My orders have been small and there was no extra postage or duty.
I have order through Amazon from private sellers from HK. Shipping varies and I have never been charged any additional cost through the post office.

Redeemed- Those stamps are so cute. I order a lot from Hong Kong. I am in the U.S. I never had to pay customs, taxes or any fees. I order between $20-$500 per month.
If your package is routed through Shanghai it will take longer to deliver. If it goes through German customs they will inspect it. China inspections seem to put holds on packages for a couple of days. Expect about 1-8 weeks for your package. I only had a couple of packages that were 8 weeks and that was due to Shanghai.

I just bought something on amazon that came from china. I purchased a new Verizon phone and wanted a case for it but not the high in store prices. I found one for my exact phone on Amaz. ordered it. It was leather with a design I loved and only $6 IT DID take almost a month to arrive but OH MY am I ever pleased. It is very high quality and budget friendly . Loved the free shipping No extra fees and I of course gave them a very high rating. Just don't expect things in a hurry.
$6.77 is a good price for the set of 6. I have ordered from Hong Kong many times. I search mostly for crafting and embellishments that are not advertised as such.
I buy the "nail art" teeny tiny rhinestones and polymer clay figures for card embellishments because they are so small, they don't set off the Post Office "bump" alarms and go for a single stamp rate. You can get 2400 itty bitty rhinestones for less than $1.50:
Deeann. I would be very interested in seeing some of the seaerches or items you buy from ebay crafts that you spend $500 a month. So lucky to have such a big budget.! (If you don't mind). I wish they manufactured dies in China then the price here wouldn't be so crazy. Sometimes I think $20 for one die is so high but we have no other option
What a great idea to use nail art on cards! I learn from this forum every day

I thought dies were manufactured over sea's. That is why it takes soooo long for dies to be available after release.

Hi I have recently been ordering quite a few charms from China & so far every single one I have received hasn't incurred any charges. From past experience usually something as small amount as you mentioned doesn't usually incur any additional charges although all countries have a limit before extra charges are incurred. I have been surprised by how quick the items I ordered have arrived, although not quick for UK to UK standards all my purchases have arrived before the estimated delivery time & have all been of decent quality.
I thought all dies were made in usa (or Europe). But I think little b brand makes in China.
I heard someone in youtube saying that. I think it was Kristina Werner but not sure
Spellbinders/Nestabilities Dies are made in China.

CopperKids- I didn't say I spend $500 on craft items from Hong Kong. I said I ordered around $500 a month for items. My searches on Ebay are private, sorry. I am sorry if I come off sharp. I feel a few of us girls on this forum are slapped down for having large budgets or nice things.

deeann. i have been obsessed with crafts lately and assumed everyone is buying and thinking about crafts only also! so i apologize for assuming. when i posted, i was thinking "oooh, someone is buying something crafty on ebay - i want it too even though i dont know what it is." so i didnt mean to be sly or anything of that sort. we both mis-understood.
a few months ago, i came across really cute circular stamps on amazon [showed up in my feed], and they were $20 for a [small] set of 4. ok, so not so high, but i was debating if really worth it. then i was looking at something else on ebay and thought i would see if the ones i wanted were on ebay. they were ! for about $1 each. this is what i was thinking when i posted.

No need to apologize. It was a perfectly reasonable assumption given this is a craft site and how crazy we all are for craft and art supplies!
Copperkids- No worries. I got your sweet PM. I truly do understand. Don't be upset or not feel like your welcomed here. I think you are a sweet girl. I look forward to reading more of your posts.
I ordered some water colour paints via a second party in Japan on amazon canada. The water colour paints arrived within three weeks and that was with standard shipping. Really well packaged - I was delighted. I have found that generally speaking it is rare for Canada Post to charge you duty / or taxes if your purchase is below $100.00.
