Question about ATG tape yellowing and losing adhesive
I have a YT channel for disabled crafters and got this question and didn't know how to answer it. The viewer lives in Arizona and she's purchased all of the big ATG guns as well as the small tape runners, and she says she's using acid free tapes and the tape turns yellow and stop holding projects together. We're assuming it has to do with the dry air and heat, but I wondered if anyone here has an alternative for her other than wet glue. I'd really appreciate any help you can give us with this.....Thanks so much...Sandy Parker
Scor tape might be a good alternative. It is very sticky though and once it's stuck it can't be removed.
I just recently won a scor tape prize and it was my first time ever using it, I am impressed. Haven't compared the cost yet to the AGT refills.
Thanks for the idea..do you live in a hot dry climate like Arizona..we think that's her biggest issue is the dry heat...
I live in Illinois, so summers mostly hot and humid. But I personally have been having issues with my ATG in the recent months ... the glue sticking to itself instead of the paper, and I constantly have to open up the tape runner to fix the roll. (Maybe I'm doing something wrong though??) I haven't noticed cards falling apart after they are finished, but just the problem while using it. I also use the acid free, maybe they are defective?
Hope the viewer can find something that works for her.
I'm not sure if you have ever seen the "shims" that others have made to keep their atg tapes from sticking, but this might help your problem. Here's a video I found that walks you through it..I appreciate your input and maybe I can give you a hand as well. Quick Tip: "Shimming" Your ATG - YouTube
Thank you!! I am not familiar with that video and will be taking a look! It's frustrating to waste tape because it sticks to itself than the paper!
ETA: Just watched it! Amazing! Such an easy fix, I didn't know what was causing my problems, and I do get mine from Joann's so I can see why I am having the problems now!
I also live in AZ & have problems during the summer with the ATG or any tape runner. When working on a project that I expect to last a long length of time, I use a wet glue & that is usually Aleene's tacky glue. Even then I'll only work on any paper gluing when the AC has had a chance to cool the house. Our humidity, during the summer months, is usually around 5%. I'm originally from the midwest. There is quite a difference.
In my experience any tape style adhesive eventually yellows and dries up/falls apart.
I highly recommend liquid adhesive. Do you think this person could pour liquid adhesive into a dish and then use a sponge to apply it to the card stock?
I haven't used my ATG in awhile. I use score or sook wang tape and put a dab of glue just in case. You can take off the tape and ATG glue with Undu. It will not release liquid glue at all. So liquid glue is permanent?
i only use 3M brand for my ATG. i found too many problems with the cheaper brands.
I agree... I've bought several cheaper brands but they all seem to have issues from the get-go (while loading the tape onto the gun) or seem to be verrrry old product. Future purchases will all be 3M... and stored lying down on a flat surface so the wheel/tape doesn't distort.
Thanks for your advice. I think I can help you with storing the ATG lying down....I watched this video and it keeps your tape in place... Hope it helps.. Sandy
