I have a foam mat that I use, it's kind of like a mouse pad. It has a little more give to it than a self healing mat.

The mat pack is nice and I love it, but if you want a cheap-o alternative, you can use a mouse pad and a thumb tack. If you'd like even holes, buy a piece of that plastic canvas for cross stitching (I think that's what it's for anyways!)

I used a mat pack and plastic canvas for months, till I was able to use the SU mat pack at a swap. WOW! Had to have it. Makes the piercing look 100 times more even and is *much* faster. Probably the best SU $10 I spent all last year! (And I'm a demo.) I just bought a piercing tool at Michaels or JOanns--under $4.

Until I get my SU matt pack, I use a mouse pad and a thumbtack. Not the greatest but it works in a pinch.

I was going to get the SU mat pack for piercing, but then I realized that it's smaller than a card front. Does anyone know where you can buy one that is similar to the SU one but large enough to cover an entire card front so you wouldn't have to keep moving it along the edge of the card?
