JUICY GOSSIP!!!
PSYCHE!!! Actually, if you've truly read Daven's OP about the SCS Galleries, read no further, and thank you.
If you haven't, and are interested in factual information, have I got the low-down for you!
If you'll carefully read Daven's OP:
It's not about storage (photos or forums)
It's not about becoming a fee-based site. Never a part of Daven's plan.
It's not about anybody's personal financial situation.
It's not about excluding anyone.
It IS about the following:
1. Fan Club Members donate $25 annually to support the site.
2. The Gallery Server(s) CANNOT handle this tremendous flow of traffic, from both FC and non-FC Members alike. The gallery is therefore rendered useless to everybody. 
3. SCS wishes to make sure FC Members that have paid to support the site receive a quality gallery experience. Why? Because without their support, this site would cease to exist!!!
4. So, TEMPORARILY, until quality gallery speed can be restored for EVERYBODY that uses this site, he is going to restrict the flow to the galleries for Non FC Members to 2 routes: Member Galleries and Techniques Galleries, and no uploads.
He is anticipating a ONE MONTH restricted access to the galleries for Non FC folks who access the site.
WHY? Because the % of SCS users that are FC Members is relatively small in comparison to Non FC Members. This means: Non-FC Members are the BULK of the heavy traffic.
Daven has no "desirable" options. It just is what it is: too much traffic for the servers to handle. WITHOUT A MAJOR OVERHAUL, WE WILL ALL LOSE THE GALLERY ENTIRELY. IT IS ALREADY LIMPING VERY BADLY!!!!
The only EXTRA perk FC Members have at this site is a special gallery called the Dirty Dozen/Fan Club Gallery. It is a thank-you gift to them for supporting the site.  It's not "the reason" they donate.
Everybody will STILL have access to the entire site, forums, tutorials.
EVERYBODY will be able to see ALL the A-Z galleries, etc. via EVERY route after these improvements are made.
There is now an option for $14.95/6 mos. support donation. WOO HOO!!!!! Yea!!!! Cool and awesome!!!!__________________ JulieHRR

Shelly, as you are a supporting member of the Fan Club, the reduction in traffic will enable you to access the galleries, rather than it coming to a screeching halt, crashing, etc., during the month that improvements are being made.
I dunno how it is for you right now, but sometimes, I cannot even get in there at all, and I'm on high speed cable!. . . I got stuff to upload for the coming October DD Gallery, and it's particularly frustrating when the deadline is bearing down on me, and I can't even get in the door . . . Um, what will have changed within one month that the restriction could be lifted? And what is to stop people from leaving for a month, returing, and then having the same traffic problems???
Don't get me wrong, I'm already an FC member, will continue to contribute, and I am actually looking forward to being able to traverse the site more quickly.
My question is about that I am trying to understand how joining for 1 month will solve anything -- or are you hoping that it will raise enough funds for a server migration?

Good question!
You are right: from that stand-point, "joining for one month" doesn't "solve" the problem, and it is not the issue.
Daven and the web crew need room to work around and overhaul the server. This may involve an entirely new server being installed, but one that has much greater capacity to handle more traffic without buckling and crumbling as this one is doing.
There was only a request for understanding among non-FC Members to sit tight outside most of the routes into the galleries, until the upgrades could be installed.
Some folks would rather support the site (had planned on it anyway, but never had gotten around to it) by enrolling NOW, because #1, they want to support the site, see the need for support and are able to support, also many were not aware there even was an option to support the site and are thrilled to be able to do so! Now, yes, it is true that as FC Members, they will retain full-access to the galleries during the one month improvement phase, but I believe that this reason is secondary to the other reasons in the hearts of FC Members.
There was no request for anyone to donate at this time, but considering how costly it will be to install the improvements required to handle the growing gallery traffic of SCS, every bit of support right now is greatly appreciated to help defray them.
