Default How do you remember it all?

I have been stamping for a long time. Yesterday I went to stamp some materials that I don't use that often, like vellum and acetate. I was planning to color the images with Adirondack alcohol inks on the back. I also wanted to stamp some images on glossy card stock and color with alcohol inks directly on the images. I found myself going crazy trying to remember which ink to use, if it needed to be heat set, and wondering if there was some other detail I needed to remember. So, how do you keep it all straight?

I do a lot of searching on the internet. Type in your key words and there is usually lots to chose from. YouTube and blogs as well as here on SCS.

I have two things that help me. I have a folder with techniques printed out. They have all the specifics and the warnings about what to use, what not, etc. I also make notes about how the technique worked for me, and what I used. The second thing I do isthat I type up and print out the card directions for specific cards. I include the essentials and directions, and then I also include the actual card in a clear sleeve. They are all organized by type and in a binder. When I want to create using a specific technique I have used on a card before, I go to the card (I remember the card).
Otherwise, check around here or google it.

For me it just comes from using my supplies a lot! Plus I have a cheat sheet.

I have a binder divided with tabs for different types of supplies [inks, embossing powders, markers, etc.] and techniques. They were from magazine articles, the internet or just notes I made for myself.

Sorry, to butt in, newbie here. You mean you have to use a certain ink to stamp with (like a Staz-on ink pad) if you are going to color inside the stamping. Is that why I've seen people say use Momentos for this or Staz-on for that?

Yes, if you are using Copics to color with you need to use Memento ink. Absolutely do NOT use StazOn with Copics because it will ruin your Copic markers.

For example I had to search the site one day to remember the big shot sandwich recipe for framelits....only to find printed directions on package front when I put them away. I'm in line for the exelon patch!!

There is a lot of info floating in my head and so I keep a little notebook where I jot notes. I also keep technique tags on 2 rings (too many now for 1) and the directions on the back (learned that from both Jennifer McGuire and Tim Holtz classes). It brings things "back" to me when I am struggling.

Also, I keep a slip of paper tacked to my board with my black inks listed and what they work best for. I did this as my hubby likes to make me cards from time and a few time he colored something and it smudged and didn't know why. I explained my black inkpads are not all the same. So he can look up and grab the Memento one if he wants to color a heart with my Copics. I sometimes forget myself and have been known to grab the "wrong" black.

Thanks for the great ideas. Yesterday I started working on a note book. With the help of my Bind it All, I was able to add watercolor paper into a sketch pad, so I will be able to have examples and and notes all in one place. I also really like the idea of tags for quick reference. Since I am just starting this project I should be able to make a tag ring at the same time as I work on the notebook. Thanks for all of your help. Please continue to share if you have more ideas.

I have a 3 ring binder where I try to keep important techniques, tutorials I've printed out, and other info I might like to use over and over. I make lots of altered comp books, and finally managed to write down the measurements for the paper, so I don't have to re-measure every time I decide to cover a book.

I got a big box of inexpensive page protectors, and find it helps to keep the pages in them. That way, I can just remove the project I want, and don't need to have the whole binder on my table when I'm working.

However, lots of things don't make it into my binder. I rely a lot on google and just look stuff up as I need it.

Billie Ann - the stazon is alcohol based and the copics are alcohol based so they bleed together. use a water based ink with alcohol based ink.

Is there a place on this forum that tells you what stamping ink and what coloring device to use?

Su, Thanks for that. Now I guess I should start my own notebook on tips and tricks. I took a look at your blog and those bee items you did were cute. Also like the christmas card you did for 2010 (?). It was 3 ornaments.
