Default handmade card donation

Does anyone know of organizations who accept donated handmade greeting cards? I love to make cards but my collection is getting too big and I would love to get rid of my cards in a useful way. Thanks

Operation Write Home does, but they have some guidelines. I'm sure that a senior center or nursing home would be happy to have them to give to those who live there and/or to have on hand for residents to send to their loved ones.

From Our Hearts also accepts cards for the troops to send home. No glitter, no feathers, no heavy, thick embellishments.

I make cards for my local pregnancy center and I can't keep up with how many they need. They use Baby, Thank You, Praying for you, and Birthday cards. If you're interested, you can PM me for the address. They would love any extras you have.

Donate them to your local nursing homes. They love to have cards available for the residents to send to family and friends.

I've been asked to make some "Thinking of you" and encouragement cards for our local domestic violence center. So you can check with such organizations in your area.

Here you go: From Our Hearts

The address is on the left side as the second "block" down.

I love that this organization does not restrict the type or theme of the cards they accept so things like "get well" or "happy anniversary" are acceptable and they also welcome cards with other than Caucasian images. I have always felt that a service person of color should be able to send their kids a card that looks like their own children. Please do remember that they cannot accept cards with glitter on them as they can pose a safety hazard to our troops as glitter does show up on night vision glasses.

Default another place to consider

why not take a box of them to your local senior center, residents who come there for meals may not have the funds to buy cards for others.

I am so glad that you started this thread. I, also, am looking for a place to donate cards. There have been some great ideas posted! Can anyone tell me where to find the "Cards for a Cause" thread. I can't seem to locate it doing a general search. Thank you in advance.

Every October Splitcoast hosts a card drive called Hope You Can Cling To - the cards are sent to MD Anderson's Breast Cancer unit to be used by patients and visitors. They'll take cards any time of the year, and they're always appreciated. There are a few small restrictions - you can find all the details here:

So many fabulous places to donate cards to! I've been donating mine to my Aunt, who makes baskets for cancer patients for two years now and I love the feeling I get when she say "ooh, they loved your card Tabbatha!". It is a great way to brighten any one's day.

I've been making cards for Operation Write Home which is a great cause & is so well run. I'm looking for some local places to give too and have thought the senior center & nursing homes would be a good idea and that I might even do some card making workshops there donating my time and supplies. Also I was thinking our local Meals on Wheels might appreciate some cards or tags to hand out along with meals during the holidays or even on Valentine's Day. It feels so good to donate plus you get great experience & have such an excuse to buy more supplies.

araymond, I love the Meals on Wheels idea! There are so many wonderful causes we can donate cards to. I also like the idea of doing something locally in addition to OWH. Thanks for the thought!

I love to make Christmas cards and I also love to recycle: using elements from used Christmas cards (kindly given to me by friends and family) with items from my own stash I make far more than I need. I pack the extra cards up in bags of 10 and give them to family and friends to send, on condition that they make a donation to a charity of their choice, equivalent to what they would have spent on a pack of 10 cards. It's far better than people buying so-called charity cards, where very little of the money paid actually ends up with the charity.

Default Cards for a Cause

I sponsor a group a ladies for the last three years who help me make cards for different charity organizations monthly. We have done Project Write Home, all of the 4 hospice houses in our area, woman's shelters, Cancer Association, local Veteran groups, church groups, hospitals, support groups for shut ins, council of aging etc. Some of them use them to write messages and give to their clients others give the cards to the clients to send to their family members for different occasions. We do different cards and treat things for the vets for all of these organizations for Veteran's Day. Just call around in your area for groups and ask them if they could use cards. Ask them what they would like on them and then make them. We do mass production of these with 10-20 of one kind and give 100 cards to each group each time we make for them.

Our card making group donates to Operation Write Home as an international outreach, our regional Ronald McDonald House and locally to a local facility for troubled youth along with our county jail. The county jail needs them to be one layer cards. All three groups are very happy to get our donations and we feel like we are distributing to a well rounded base.

I make and collect cards to send to a missionary family we support. It gives them a chance to send something other than cards printed from the internet. THey need to be mailable...in other words, not loaded with embellies and thick bows, but that's easy to do. I follow the guidelines for USPS and it works for cards mailed outside the country. It would also be nice if you include the envelope. If you don't have some place you want to send cards to, contact me by PM and I'll give you my address and I'll send them on in the next box.

I'm glad I found this thread. I was looking for some new ideas since OWH said in their August 1st Sit Rep that they will not be needing as many cards this year. I am going to donate some cards to a local cat rescue group.
Also give packages of cards to family members and others who are shut ins. I did this for my Dad when he was still living. He was in his 90's and could no longer get out to buy cards so it was helpful to him to have various occasions to send out.

Yes I too am looking for some where else to send cards since the news that OWH will be needing less cards because if I make less cards I might have to clean the house or do laundry, oh the horror!

They said they are going to need less than a quarter of the cards they did last year and many of their contacts are being reassigned and will be gone before Halloween or Christmas, so the need for those cards is much, much less. They are asking that you make the more generic cards rather than those that are holiday specific.

The video reporting on this is here:

Operation Rolling Tapegun: Update, August 2014 | Operation Write Home

Unfortunately you do have to sit through almost 11 minutes to glean what could have been said in about 3.

Note that they have a "shop" now and My Favorite Things was so great to donate to a fundraiser for OWH. MFT sent so many of their retiring stamp sets and you can buy in "grab bag" fashion. It's a win-win for everyone.
