Either one is correct, but I always liked the last initial. I did google it and I came up with the following: Stamps and Embossers: This one is tricky! For a woman, if you are putting a single initial, you can use either the first or last initial but the trend leans more towards the first name initial. If the stamp is for a man or a couple, we suggest using the last name. Hope this helps.

Thanks! I also tried to google it--your googling skills are better than mine! ;)
For me personally, I would rather receive something with my first initial. Especially since I am married and don't have the same last name (or initial) I had for the first thirty years.
My personal preference would be if its a personal gift for a specific person, I would use the first initial. If it was a gift to a household (instead of the usual fruit cake), I would use the last initial.
If it's for a friend or someone close to me or I'm doing it as a casual type of card, I always use the first initial. I've only ever done them for women or for a married couple who have the same last name. Each time I go to do them, I ask myself the same question - is it the first or last initial?!

Your wording made me laugh: "to a household (instead of the usual fruit cake)" .
I somehow thought of giving to a household, or to the head fruitcake (a person)
That's because I'm the usual fruitcake in my household.

I am slightly over 40 and would definitely want my first initial. I use note cards for informal things such as mailing pictures, saying thanks, etc. Just seems more natural to me.
Many of my married friends have retained their maiden name so it gets more tricky. Therefore, I decided when I did these last year to use the first initial of the woman for her notecards.
wow, I am sure Miss Manners would say Last Initial, bc I just made 5 sets with everyones' last initial except the girl who is under 30! Maybe I am old fashioned!! But I agree now that it is done, I do like my first initial bc it is from me,Jill, not Mrs. F!!!
My preference is that if it's set of notecards for a woman and you are only using one initial to make it the first name. I think that's more personal than the last name.
