Question Every heard of a distressing tool?

I recently read that patterned paper with a weathered wood look was a trend noticed at CHA. Then I read of a distressing tool. I Googled it and came up with several things that sand and rip the edges of your paper, some are even electric. Where have I been that I've never heard of this

Do you have one? What type and do you like it?

I thought I was pretty clever when I got Tim Holtz's wood grain embossing folder. I just finished making my first card with it today (below). How cool would this embossed woodgrain look with the distressed edges? ;)

I don't have one, but have seen them used on youtube videos. I don't really do the distressed, vintage look, so I haven't wanted one so far.

Cool Is This It?

I have this one that has Tim Holtz's name on it. Love it. I believe that it was about $5.95 and I got it at a scrapbook store. Don't know if Michaels or JoAnns carries it. It works great, and the finished product looks really distressed.

Me either, but for this aged wood - I would. (pun intended)

Your image is so pretty and I love that embossing folder. When I ordered from ScrapMart, they sent me a pink colored thing and I didn't know what it was. My daughter thinks it's something to distress your paper with.

I'll be darn that sounds like a price I can live with too! I'll see if I can scare one up at the Stamp/Scrap show in Columbia this weekend :p

Thanks!

When I started scrapbooking in 2005 or 2006, distressing tools were really popular.

I have this one: Making Memories Edge Scraper Tool : embellishment tools : scrapbooking tools : scrapbooking : Shop | Joann.com I hardly ever use it. It makes a smooth edge of cardstock rough, but if you try too hard it just rips the paper.

Try your favorite beauty supply. You can find all kinds of distressing tools (aka: nail files) The extra rough and not-so-rough emery boards, metal files and, my favorites, the foam blocks with rough and not-so-rough grits. Try using one of these with a white (or color) core paper that's been embossed.

If you want the torn look, the edge of your scissors will do it too. You just drag one sharp edge along the side.

You Tube it for some techniques if you are unsure how to use them, there is no way I can think of to describe it adequately.

I have this cutter kit from Stampin' Up that includes a distressing tool that looks like the ones shown previously. I use it ALL THE TIME! Saves my nails and is much easier to use than a blade or knife. I actually used it on a card Riders on the Stormthat I'd embossed a wood grain on today.

Hi Carole! Very nice card & what a great job you did coloring it! I really like the E.F. too. Will have to add that one to the list! TFS!

Mamaxsix, that card is so pretty, I love the edges.
You know I searched for a SU demo in my area thinking that would be a way to connect with other stampers. I emailed her and never heard from her. I think I'll try another one.

Thanks Connie! I'm having sooo much fun with my new Northwoods stamps. Now if I can just talk myself into unmounting them. lol

LOL Magnolia. I only just invested in a distressing tool a couple of weeks ago. Got one like this for a couple of dollars.

I also have some mini files from Kaiser

and a sanding block from the hardware store.

I have the one in post #3, but it's always getting lost on my desk. Just as well that 90% of the time I use my fingernails and don't even go looking for it . You can also just use your scissors blade. Note that some papers distress better than others - and watercolour paper distresses just beautifully!

I have the Heidi Swapp one pictured. You can find it HERE, as well as many other places. I also use the blade of my cheap micro-serrated-edge scissors quite a bit.

I did know about the nail files for the surface of the paper, especially after embossing it works on the raised areas. All these tools for the edges wow.

I could not use my fingernails either. Like a pp said, they are too thin and short.

Check out this tutorial:

Can't say on the thin, but short isn't an issue! I keep mine short for the piano and flute .

I use a seam ripper and it does a good job. You can distress on dry paper or lightly (very lightly) mist the paper and it tears up the fibers nicely.

This is the one that I have and it works great - really easy to handle, too.

Some people can get that distressed/roughed up edge by using a pair of scissors! I'd probably cut myself ;) .

I've done distressed edges with a Scor-Pal, pressing hard to score the lines, then folding back and forth, and tearing unevenly along the score. Here's what that type of edge looks like: Digi-Stamp Wallaby & Kookaburra by Crafts - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers

I use my tim holtz/tonic distress tool all the time. It is easy, and safe for me..I am a bit clumsy and the idea of using scissors is not good for me.... I have my tool on a nail in front of me at all times so when I need to use it it is handy.

Me too! I never lose them on my desk, don't have to go hunting for them, and they don't cost me anything! Although they would if I got manicures... probably if you 'do' your nails you aren't going to want to ue them as a distressing tool.

My friend and I were at a scrapbook expo and bought a distressing tool by Inguild Bo....(?) when I was at Dollar Tree I was in the aisle that had manicure/pedicure stuff. Guess what - the tool to use on the heel of you foot looks similar to the own I bought at the expo. Of course, it cost more because it had a few other accessories (blade edge,2nd rough portion, and a wire brush tucked into the handle) but I bet the pedicure one would work.

I had the Heidi Swap and Making Memories ones already but.....

I have this one too. I use it and I use the edge of a school kid's type of scissors. Both work great!

I edge distress quite often and have always loved the look when appropriate!

I love the Ranger Distress Ink to stain the edges too. Love this look. Works really great on guy cards-masculine cards.

On the rare occasions when I distress anything I use a Clover thread cutter. It's the same concept with the circular blade, etc.

I have the Making Memories one, which btw looks just like the Bella one. It came in a distressing kit that also included emory boards, white 4 sided emory block, sand paper, steel wool and some other misc inks, etc.

I also picked up some extra emory boards. I got them free at a Woman's convention I attended with my aunt and sister. I had them get one for me also so now I have several sitting in a pencil cup holder in front of me. You can also get sand paper and steel wool at dollar stores. I take a strip and tape it around a wood block (previously a stamp mount block) which makes it super easy to sand with.

One more thing that I learned forever ago on the Carol Duvall show, tearing your up paper towards you is a different look than tearing away/down.

I have this set too and you know what I love? One of the tools does a perforation cut...so if you are doing a card and want to do a tear off bookmark...you just run the tool where you want it to tear off! I have had this tool for nearly a year and just figured that cutter out!!!

I tried the seam ripper today and it worked pretty well, lots of work. If I see one of the tools at the stamp show tomorrow, I'll get it.

I have a Fiskars' trimmer with a scoring blade and a perforating blade on it.

I also have the Heidi Swapp tool that looks like a pink Pac Man. I paid a whole 99 cents for it brand new!

That is one of the reasons I bought the set...that, and by dipping the distressing tool into white craft ink you can faux stitch with it. It has cutting, scoring, perforating and distressing tools all on the key chain so you don't lose it/them!

I bought mine thinking of only the distressing tool. Later I found the tim holtz tool and bought that for a friend, but it made me pull out my set from SU. That's when I discovered the other tools and the perforation tool. I will have to try the trick of faux stitching and see what happens. Thanks.

Funny how things work...I have the TH distressing tool but can't ever find anything to distress! After looking at the cards y'all mentioned, I orderd the woodgrain embossing folder!

I just tried it and wow! I used the woodgrain emb. on deep red cs, then used the TH Dist. Tool on the edges. Then I sponged some distress ink over the edges and the raised part of the wood grain.... ooohhhh! It will look so good with my barn, covered bridge and old mill stamps. Then today at the stamp show I bought a great UM of another old barn with Mailpouch Tobacco painted on the side.

I was a good girl too, I only spent $50 and stayed in my budget
