I'm thinking about getting a big shot even though I have a cuttlebug. I love the milk carton die and don't want to break my bug. Does anyone have both machines and find having the two machines a good thing?

I have both because I bought the cuttlebug first. Since I bought my big shot, my cuttlebug has been packed away in a closet. You don't need both since you can use your cuttlebug dies and embossing folders with the big shot.
Another who had the cuttlebug and bought the big shot! I need up giving my bug to a friend. I just love the big shot and it feels alot more sturdy, for lack of a better word, than the cuttlebug did. One of the best tools I have purchased!
Ok this is funny cuz I have both and there are times just because of size and I'm doing maybe a folder? or something small I tend to go towards the bug.. Dont get me wrong I LOVE my BS but the bug is handier for me at times, erm I tend to SPREAAAAAAAAAD out and I end up with it on my lap.. lol

YES, this is me as well! I have both, love both, and use them for different purposes. For a quick embossing, my go to machine is the CB. IMO, it's just easier to manipulate and the sandwich is sooooo much easier! I also use my Bug pretty exclusively with my nesties...again for the same reason.
Yet, my BS is bigger, wider, and just sturdier. So, my steel rule (hope this is the right way to describe those bigger, thicker dies) dies get a workout in this machine. Plus, I can use these dies to cut other materials like chipboard, which is way cool!
So...I have both machines and would be lost without either one. They just compliment each other really well....at least in the way I use them.

First off, you're not going to break your bug using the sizzix dies. I used both the milk carton and matchbox dies TONS of times in my CB. BUT I do love the BS because it's just easier to use and sturdier. CB is down in the "dungeoney" basement...I need to sell it! BUT again, the CB should work just fine if that's what you have.
I have both and use both. I had the Cuttlebug first. If I'm using the thinner dies or embossing folders, I tend to grab the Cuttlebug first because it's smaller and doesn't take up as much space. If I'm doing a lot of cutting or embossing or using the larger dies (eventhough they fit in the bug) I tend to grab the bigshot because the handle is easier for me to crank if I'm doing it a lot - doesn't hurt my arthritic hand so much. Also, if I'm using the Cuttlebug dies, I tend to grab the bug just so I don't have to look at a chart to see what the sandwhich needs to be. Just grab and go.

I've read many posts where people have both.
I have my "bug" and love it. I do worry about breaking it when I start to get the large SU dies. I figure I'll just use it till it breaks....and maybe it won't, as lots of posts say they use sizzix dies in the cuttlebug.
I'm too practical to own both. I also want to spend my crafting $$$$ on those dies...not another die cut machine!

HTH,

I was going to write this same thing. For me, my CB fits in a space very close to my work surface so it's easy to grab and use...I use it most often. BUT, there are some things that work best with the BS so I keep both. I found a BS for like $47 (pink and hello kitty) at Ritz Camera last year. I've had the CB for years...it's one of my very favorite tools.
I have the cuttllebug and the Big Shot Pro. I wanted the Pro because of the larger platform and to be able to use their score dies and the larger dies.
I still use my bug for those quick cuts using spellbinder dies simply because it is more handy. The larger machine just give me more options and I hope, with the new spellbinder machine that just came out there will be more options for larger (like 12" ) dies.
I too have both..but use the cuttlebug all the time. It is about 4 years old and I have a feeling getting worn out..I use the CB for all dies and for the embossing folders...these days that is like every card...so when the little bug bites the dust I will start using the BS who sits there patiently waiting...lol
blessings.
Thanks for all your wonderful input. I decided to go for it and ordered a Big Shot. Joann.com has it on sale and free shipping over $50 with coupon code AP46.
Now if I can only sell my original sizzix on the bay!
I have the CB and the BigKick...I use them both...CB is small and I can whip it out for a quick cut, then if I am doing several different things, I grab the BigKick...Like you, I do not want to over-stress my CB and I had it first then got the BigKick...
I am even looking at the Grand Calibur...Only because it will take the larger size of Spellbinders dies...

Glad this post came up. I have a sidekick which only does small dies and embossing folders, and it it getting hard to find them, everything is bigger. I have been considering getting a bigger machine and the information here is very helpful
I had both and used both, the bug for embossing and the big shot for cutting. My sister was wanting a cuttlebug so I gave her mine and have never regreted it. LOVE my big shot!
I have both. I use the Cuttlebug only for embossing. My plates for that have stayed pristine. I use the Big Shot for the Nestabilities and the plates are curled and grooved and look very, very used! I love them both.

YEAH....have have the pink Hello Kity BS too! I got quite a deal on it after last ('09 Christmas) on the Sizzix site. Bought a whole bunch of dies (on sale too) to go with it. Now, I'm pretty much set! I did buy a set of back up plates for my BS, with a coupon at Michael's awhile back, but, as yet, haven't needed to use them. I find it's just nice to know that when I need to them, I won't have to go far!
hate to muddy the waters but now I have a Grand Calibur from Spellbinders. Beats both the big shot and the cuttlebug.
I got it for free from Spellbinders because I was part of the Waltzingmouse Design team. however, then I dropped out and Spellbinders graciously allowed me to keep it for free with no obligations on my part to ever use it or mention it again.
however, I love it. the embossing is so much better, but the best thing is that, while it takes up very little space, the plates are 8.5" x almost 12". This allows me to open up a card and put it through the machine without getting a mark on the bottom side of the card made by the ends of the Big Shot plates.
So, something for you to think about

I have both. For a while, I found that I was still using my CB more often. I had them both in a cabinet, so it was often easier to just grab the CB. However, since I found a permanent space on my table for my BS I very rarely use my CB. I will use the CB if I am going to go stamp/scrap with a friend, so I won' be getting rid of it. Just my two cents.
Have both - got the CB when I was first 'testing the waters' of cardmaking. Love this machine - even the color. Got the BS as a requested Christmas gift but find it takes up lots of space to use. If you are not using the multi-platform with all the tabs closed, the length of the platform is so long that you have to have clearance. I know some people unscrew the tabs and create sandwiches but then I have to keep track of the different platforms. Do this for my CB so don't want to have plates all over my crafting area.
I actually use my CB most often because it was my first die cutting machine and I am comfortable with the various sandwiches to use with the various dies I have. Do use the BS with extender plates for the XL dies - matchbox, shapers & movers, etc. The BS is my 'back up' if my CB breaks down - heaven forbid!
If you are still shopping and want the BS, JoAnn has them on sale and here is a free shipping code for minimum $35 orders - PIA40 (good until 2/9/11). The sale price of the BS is more than $35.
Joan...The Grand Calibur only takes the wafer thin dies like Spellbinders and Quickutz right?
That was why I was thinking of getting it, for the larger size...
Thank you!! I forgot about that. the Grand Calibur will not take the bigger Sizzix dies. Good point. I didn't think of it, since I have the Big Shot.....

Thanks Joan...I thought that was it but needed to make sure! LOL Because of my nestie habit, the new larger dies, it just seems the ext step to get the Grand Calibur and then maybe I could let the CB go...

same happened to me! because i bought the bug first and then the big.... i really use them both a lot..... cause since i have them in different places in my office for small things i use the bug, easy to reach and for my big dies i use the big...... and also if you go scrapping a lot outside home the bug is easier to carry!!
I have both. I emboss in the CB and do all the cutting in the BS.
That's a great idea! I've had a cuttlebug for years and recently bought a big shot. I do stamp camps about 3 times per year at my house and one machine just wasn't enough. I've kept my BS on the table and my CB on the shelf since then, but it is a pain to flip the tabs on the bs when I'm cutting and embossing a bunch of nesties. I think I'll try that!

This is exactly WHY I have both machines and don't regret it. I think they just compliment each other so nicely!
I have both, but honestly the only time my CB comes out is to go to a crop where i'm only embossing with the cuttlebug. It's easier to carry. But it seems everytime I go I wish I had brought the BS and a bigger die. I think the Big shot is definitely worth the investment.
I'm another one who has both the Cuttlebug and Big Shot. I also find that the Bug is easy to grab for quick projects but have made many milk cartons with the Big Shot. When I go to weekend scrapbook retreats I take the Bug. Love both of these machines.
