We have a sewing group at our church. We make Doo Rags and take them to an oncologist's office near us. We donate them free of charge to the patients. The pattern we use is at www.sewersforum.com . Just click on "cancer hat" and it will come up. The patients love them. We also put a card in the bag with them with the "What cancer cannot do".
My best friend is now a patient there, using the doo rags that she has been making for so long. Our group made her a "Sunshine Basket" with lots of goodies in it, like the small packages of Crystal Lite to put in her water bottles, soft fuzzy socks, CDs, DVDs, and a small player to use with these, sugar free gum and mints and candies, bookmarks, books, note cards to send to others, and all sorts of things. She was just thrilled with them. Hope that helps.
I'm subscribing to this thread...My Mother is going through Chemo and is very depressed...Thank you for the list and the ideas...I'm hoping they will help...

I made a version of the paint can for a friend (from the magazine) a couple of years ago. Bought a empty paint can from the home improvement store, used shads of brown and pink. My friend loved it, and kept refiling it to use. Anthing like what the others have listed will be appreciated.
I bought a lined journal at Target and personalized it for my friend when she was going through treatment. I bought the What Cancer Cannot Do stamp from CatholicStamps.com (I think that's the name of the site). This journal was fairly large, but you could make a smaller one that is easier to carry in a purse or tote. Sometimes journaling helps those who are going through a rough time. Great pattern. Thanks for sharing this with us. And thank you for being so kind and generous in sewing and donating these caps to those who are going through a very rough time. People you don't even know! What an angel you are.
Im so glad I found this thread! My friend is starting Chemo next week and I've been trying to figure out what to give her....this has such great ideas! Thank you all!
I know ther eis nothing "easy" about chemo, but if your friend has a sense of humor, an EASY buttonf rom Staples may add a little fun/humor for everyone. I use these gifts in tins for friends who are pregnant (labor kit tins).

My husband underwent surgery and then chemo for lung cancer last year. He really liked lemon drops for that metallic taste. Also, he liked the warmer knit caps for sleeping in as he was always cold.
Wow such great ideas. Well my friend starts chemo on Friday and I finished her 1st kit today. I'm using the paint can idea and in the first kit is:
non-metallic deodorant
lip balm
soft cap (for sleeping) from headcovers
lemmon drops
Quesi drops
crossword puzzle book
Elta cream moisturizer
Book: I'd rather clean the garage than have chemo
I also made her a journal with inspirational and humorus quotes and a card. I'll follow-up with additional refil items every other week to coincide with her treatment using some of your great ideas.

The chemo caps we make are a "side line" from our main service group. We are members of "Threads of Love" which is a large organization that sews and makes clothing for preemies in hospitals. You might want to check this out at www.threadsoflove.org and see if there is anything there you might want to do. We had lots of fabrics donated to us "for the babies" that wasn't suitable for them, so we started making doo rags and comfort caps from those fabrics. We just love making all the items.

Thanks for the link - I'll present these ideas to the sisters as well.

Sadly now I need this kit idea for my cousin in Omaha. She just got a clean bill of health after fighing blood cancer and she now is going to battle breast cancer and will be having chemo after her surgery.
Oh so sorry to hear you news. My friend is finished her chemo, is having surgery next month and then starts her rounds of radiation.
I sent a total of 5 packs of goodies to my friend and she loved them all. Each treat box had a edible treat, something for stamping, and something to make her laugh. She kept saying I shouldn't do it but I told her it was my way of showing my support since she wouldn't let me help around the house or in the yard.
