Standard A2 here, but I usually make larger ones for my granddaughters. They're worth it!
Me, too, Cindy. And like you, sometimes I make 5 x 7 for the grandkids!
I've always made the A2 size since you can get 2 card bases from a sheet of 8-1/2 x 11 cardstock, and also because it's easy to find envelopes that size.
However, I just got the nifty Envelope Punch by We R Memory Keepers. Now that it's so easy to make other size envies, I may branch out to other sizes a little more often.

I usually try to use A2, but so many of the beautiful cards on this site have so many elements on them. I thought they might be larger. I probably need some art training. I have a more analytical mind and it's hard for me to go asymetrical, mix patterns, and use accesories.
Any suggestions on sites that might help me to find my artistic side? That is, if I have one ;)
After I've done the image and put it on some layers of matting, added some embellishment and a sentiment, I try to find a piece of CS large enough to support it. :oops:
So I guess my favourite size is, whatever fits. :lol:

Right there with you on trying to find a creative/artistic side. I'm so left brained it's pathetic. Luckily, I can copy what other people do, but think up something on my own? No way.
My favorite size card is 4.25" sq because it seems I don't need to embellish as much and a 7" sq piece of dp makes a mighty fine envelope in a matter of seconds (with a scoring board). However, for mass production, I make more 4.25" x 5.5" because A2 envelopes are easy to find.
I prefer to work larger than an A2 card size. (However, I do make A2 cards only for OWH.) My card preference is for size 4.5 x 6 (the majority made) or 5 x 7 (for little grandkids). I purchase large packages of the corresponding envelope sizes for each with my Michael's coupons. I like these 2 standard sizes because it is so easy to check the chart I made and taped by my paper cutter that immediately tells me at a glance what size SU or Gina K CS to cut and the sizes to cut for the first and second layers (if there are layers). There's simply no guessing or calculations needed. Also, I line the inside of all my cards with white or ivory CS for a stamped sentiment or handwritten note, so the first layer dimensions also fit the inside. I'm not concerned with CS loss when cutting these 2 sizes, since I use the majority of my CS scraps for making small OWH A2 cards. Occasionally I do come up with a design that requires a square card or something special.
For Example (mine is in chart form):
4.5x 6 - cut 6x9 - first layer cut 4.25x5.75 - second layer cut 4x5.5
5x7 - cut 7x10 - first layer cut 4.75x6.75 - second layer cut 4.5x6.5

The majority of mine are the A2 but I do some 5X7 because someone gave me TONS of envelopes from a Hallmark. If I do a square, it is a 5X5 so I can put it in a 5X7 envelope to mail so it doesn't cost more. I've done some legal envelope size but those are a little challenging to fill up that long space.
My fave size is 5.75" square that I can get from uk a4 ca
I think the square cards are easier to make but i also make uk a6 cards which are similar to us a2 cards - again you can get 2 from a sheet.rdstock.
A2 but I make lots of other sizes depending on the sketch, bellies and stamps I'm using. If the stamp I'm using means that all the layers et al of a sketch won't work on a smaller card I bump it up til it all fits! Usually I end up with 5, 5.5 or 6" square or some odd not quite square size somewhere in that range. I'm looking forward to the WRMK envelope board for that reason. Incidentally, some measurement are off on that board's first run so if you have that one, you can get a new sticker with new measurements. Just write to customer service.

I almost always make A2 cards just because you can get two card bases from one sheet of standard cs. However, I find that I am making A6 cards more often to accomadate some lovely new stamps that are just too large for A2, but I don't like getting only one card base from one sheet of standard cs!!!

I almost always make 5 x 7. The two strips left from cutting out of an 8 1/2
x 11 piece of paper are saved and are great for lots of things. One example is
to use them to make punched borders for cards in contrasting colors. Or I use
the strips to experiment with new techniques and then use as an element on
a card. I sure have TONS of those paper strips though. Nothing ever goes to waste!
A2 for me as well. Mostly because I like that I can get the biggest bang for my buck from the 8 1/2" x 11" cs. I do have a package of 5 1/2" square cards that I use for special works - so far, as entries into a LSS contest.

One thing I have noticed is that the preferred size for American card makers seems to be 4/14 x 5-1/2 inches which makes the stamped image look big.
I bought an SU Medallion stamp and it looks disappointingly small on my 6x6 cards. (Yes I could have looked at the catalogue more carefully!)
I wonder if stamp manufacturers design around a particular card size?

The good thing is that with Art Journalling there seems to be a trend toward large stamps and sentiments ATM!
Of course if you go digital you can size to your heart's content (I have very few digital though).
I love A1 lately! I used to make primarily A2, but A1 comes together so easy for me lately. A1 is 5x7 folded in half or 3.5 x 10 folded in half to make a 3.5 x 5 card. LOVE.

Envelope punch? WHAT envelope punch?! Sound like another "must have" I will need. LOL Here in Hawaii it takes awhile to hear about neat new toys. I depend on SCS to keep me current. ;-)

Yes, I did get one when they first came out, and I love, love it. And yes, some of the measurements on the chart on the punch were incorrect. The "newer" punches they are talking about are the same punch, but they have revised the chart. No difference in the punch, though.
I contacted WRMK and they have already mailed me a revised sticker for my punch.
They still did not get the envelope size right for the A2 cards that so many of us cardmakers make. If you make that size card, you need to use a square 8 x 8, and score at 3-1/2 for a perfect A2 size "invitation" envelope. Don't use their measurements, or the envie will be too big. Unless, you want the extra room, lol, which some do like.
I make A2 size 99% of the time, and I'm happy with the measurements I came up with. The only other size I ever make is 5 x 7 occasionally, and the measurements for that size are correct.
All those other rather obscure size envelopes they show on the chart really don't matter to me, because I doubt I would ever make them.
But the basic tool is a great little gadget and makes it so easy and quick to make envelopes! I highly recommend it.

for those doing square cards, isn't there an additional cost for postage? anyone know the postage costs for larger cards?

Last I sent one it was 16 cents more postage than a regular card. It might have gone up this last round though. Also don't forget that thick embellished cards are that much more too. I don't know what it is if it's square and thick? I try to keep the ones I mail the size and thickness to go with one stamp.
