today i went to the post office to airmail ONE small stamp in a thin bubble envelope.
guess how much she was telling me.$6.60 for airmail because its considered small packet and apparently wont fit thru a mail slot.
i received last week from the US. a small box, the casette tape mailers they have holding alchohol inks and it cost my friend $1.40 USD to send it and it took 4 days for it to get to me.
This happens a lot to me but this was the worst one yet.
i am going to make my own mail dimension thingy and see if it will fit thru the slot and send it regular post.
Doesn't it just kill you! One thing I just don't get is that it costs less to send something to the US than anywhere in Canada! And it costs nearly double for me to send something past Winnipeg (from B.C.).
I hate it! I live near the boarder and I have a US PO Box so I use that but with the kids and might needing passports its a bit of a hassle to get down all the time. when my demo mails me my catty the postage is close to the same price as the book! I dont know what I'll do with 2 books a year! lol
Wow, I just mailed a stamp to a friend in a bubble envelope, first class. She got it less than 48 hours later, 2000 miles away and it cost me 63 cents to mail it!! I am in US. I will quit griping about our system. I had no idea!
Just read the same complaint on another message board over at another site. Apparently us Canadians can buy the piece of plastic that has the slot for around $10, and we can test it ourselves. If the package goes through they have to take it as the cheapest rate.
I am amused when a trader says, Will you ship to Canada? I can send MORE to Canada by air, for $3.50 than I can send from Wisconsin to Kansas for $6....I don't know what I am asking for but they always offer by air, and it is always cheap...
I rarely complain about our U.S. mail anymore, because I know too many people in Canada who have such a rough time. It also seems to take longer. Hope things get better for you soon.
It's a funny thing that it is cheaper to mail stuff like stamp sets airmail letter post to Canada from the US than it is to mail them within the United States, and it is also cheaper to mail to the US from Canada, than it is to mail within Canada - I don't get that???
...However, I think your postie was not looking at all the options for sending your stamp - I mailed a box (16 x 12 x 3) of birthday presents last Monday, sent it express post (trackable) and it cost me under $10 - $9 and something...I think she/he was looking at letter post instead of parcel post rates.
My parcel arrived the next day in Ottawa from mid SW Ontario., I was expecting 3-4 days at least!
beth, i have tried to buy that slot thingy. at postal outlets like shoppers drug mart ect, they are always out, and never have time to get to the actual postal offices during opening hours. i will on friday though.
i just placed an order with allthatscraps for 3 embossing folders. guess how much shipping? 2.92. totally unfair.

I just rec'd 2 alphabet dies for the CB from the U.S and the postage on it was $6.00, these things are heavy. I was amazed. If I shipped it from Canada to U.S. I bet it would have cost double or more just because of the weight.
I can't even go there...I'm in Newfoundland so add at least 25% and an extra week or two for shipping...it's disgusting. I buy almost everything from the US and the postage and the shipping time is wicked! The US postal service must be freakin' amazing! (or ours is just really, really cr@ppy!)
I didn't know you could buy those plastic slot things to check. I may have to get one...
I hate sending any kind of package because it NEVER seems to be less than $7 or $8, unless I'm sending to the USA, in which case it's cheaper. That is so wrong.
I had no idea Canadian Postage was so expensive. That's awful and I feel for you all! I send to Canada all the time, no wonder there are no complaints about shipping costs! Even when something is really heavy and I think "oh geeze, this is so expensive", no one has ever complained. I guess our postage costs in the U.S. aren't bad at all, and I won't ever complain again!
Add me to the list for REALLY **NOT** liking Canada Post - I too order a lot from the States b/c the shipping is CHEAPER than most online Canadian sites. And ya it's really frustrating that it's cheaper for me to mail stuff to the US than w/in Canada (yet still WAY more than what ppl pay through USPS - what costs me at least $4 can be set for like $1.50 in the States!!)
OK I'm done w/ my pity party - it felt good to vent tho!!

Barb I'm sure you are one of the honest mailers but I have had more and more mailers from the US that I think are taking some postage for granted. I have had some stamp sets sent up for 1.95 and they are big sets. The next person charges $9-11.00 postage and when you ? it they say - it costs me to go to the post office and stand in line. But isn't the sender responsible for anything any more!!! They have my money before I see my product and they want to be paid for selling the product also, rrrrrr. I love the mailers that are honest with their postage, love them, love them, they are in my favs.

I know. It should NOT cost less to send something to CA than Ontario from Nova Scotia but it does.

Here's one for ya...I had to send my son's Creative Zen to the US for repairs. It cost $20.00 to send it there. Then, when it was returned to us we had to pay $9.00 in duties. I don't get it. It was mine in the first place and I already paid provincial and federal taxes. Gotta love stuff like that! Oh, I love my country North of the Border but come on Canada Post!

were you charged actual duty or just the $5.00 handling charge? (actually a brokerage charge for uploading the parcel into the system) and then canadian taxes on the handling fee of course
Canada Post is awful. I can't tell you how many times I have been frustrated by the service or the cost. I drive to my US Post Office for almost everything. There is no way I would ever be able to work with many tight editorial deadlines if I did not live so close to the border. I LOVE THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE.

You should be able to contest that somehow. I got dinged the same way kind of, a bunch of years ago a housemate "accidentally" took a bunch of my stuff with them when they moved from Ontario to the US, and after many terse words were said, they finally sent the items back to me by mail from the US to Canada, and I had to pay $90 in duties to get my own stolen things back! I didn't even get everything back. :P
Anyone else remember when it was actually *cheaper* to move by shipping your boxes via Canada Post than by doing any other method? I moved a stationwagonful of my things from Ontario to BC for something like $175 -- waayy less than the replacement cost of the items in the boxes.
I feel your pain!! I was in a bloggers swap for valentines cards and it cost me $14.00 to mail my swap cards doen to the hostess (mind you it was a pacel because my cards were thick) and it only cost her 2.00 US to send the swap back!! crazy!
Amy, if you don't mind me asking, how much was your postage to send your valentine swap to Sarah???

Ummmm it wasn't much actually - around $5 or $6 I think?? I put mine in a bubble envelope and I packaged them so that they were as flat as they possibly could be - so they might have fit through that slot thing. I think I just lucked out w/ this one tho - I'm in the Control Freaks and I KNOW that my parcel is going to cost me a small fortune to mail out!!
I can't remember tho b/c I send all my mail and parcels w/ my mom and she mails everything for me at her local PO. The PO in my town is a NIGHTMARE to deal with and costs me double what it costs my mom!! I don't know how they do it but they do!!! So it takes me a little longer now to get things sent out (b/c I have to get them to mom then she mails them) but it has saved me SO much $$ and trouble it's worth it.

I know! I sent a card to someone and of course it had a bit of ribbon on it so they had to put it through the slot thingy and it almost didn't go through! I was thinking, if that doesn't go through I am NOT sending it!
I don't want to sound like I am any sort of advocate for Canada Post because I have, as most everyone does at one time or another, issues with them too concerning some of their services - but we do not live in a country with 300 million people, we only have 31 million and just about the same amount of real estate for Canada Post to cover - I think all in all they do a fairly reasonable job at a not bad price for a unionized shop!
I AM a flag waving Canadian! (actually I am half american)
