I grew up in IA (little town of Norway--20 minutes from CR), my brother and his family live in CR and my parents live in Amana (plus all of the rest of my extended family in the state). I've been talking to my parents daily, and am shocked at the flooding. We're supposed to be visiting in 2 weeks, so we'll see how that goes. My prayers are with all of you!
WOW ~ I had no idea SCS had this many Iowa Girls!! how awesome!
I am in Eagle Grove.... wet basement... but so thankful that we just have a wet basement!
We lost a 14 yr old boy scout in the tornado wednesday night, western Iowa. Our 13 yr old daughter was good friends with him, its devastating. My heart literally feels broken.
When will this all stop? floods, tornado's..... enough already.
It's so nice to see you all all here...... hope to bump into you again soon!

I live in Creston, in SW Iowa. I hope the bad weather/rain is gone and things can get back to normal soon. Luckily here we had minor flooding last week, because we got 10 inches of rain in a very short amount of time. We had 2 feet of water in our basement, which is luckily unfinished, but we lost our central air. We don't live near any rivers, thank GOD. I am very sad for the people that do. This is unbelievable!!
After this is over, I say that all us Iowa Ladies get together to do something positive - like stamp and scrap!! I live in Sumner.
The reports coming from Waterloo, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are unbelievable. Churches, museums, libraries, businesses are all destroyed. It's amazing to watch the devestation from places I know. It breaks my heart to hear the despair in my friend's voice. She runs a daycare that has been completely destroyed. Keep praying.
Cyberhugs and many prayers for all of you being affected by tornados and the flooding. I can't imagine what you are going through and how you are coping. Stay strong!
Hi Ladies, I grew up in Dubuque, IA but currently live in Phoenix. (Went to UNI in Cedar Falls) All of my family is there still, and I just want you to know that I am praying for you all and hope that sunshine and warm weather comes your way really soon.

Thank you for all for the well wishes and Prayers.
Everyone in our this area is rationing water. Our sewers are over flowing so we are being told no showers, flushing toilets, washing dishes or washing clothes.
By next week we should all be pretty stinky with dirty dishes and clothes.
But we really appreciate all your thoughts and prayers.

I am in Keokuk, IA. We are between the Mississippi and the DesMoines Rivers. I hope everyone else stays safe and dry.
I grew up in the Keokuk area, and saw the floods in '93. If the predictions are anything like what areas to north have seen, this flood will surpass the '93 levels. Unfortunately, all the water Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Des Moines are dealing with now will eventually get there. It sounds like there is a more proactive approach this time, especially with trying to keep the bridge open. Hopefully the levee at Alexandria will hold.
Thank you for all for the well wishes and Prayers.

Marcine: Did you have any flooding at your house from Indian Creek? The river crested today so I wonder how long it will take for these smaller creeks to go down?
We lost power Thursday night for 4.5 hours but were OK today. However our phone has been out since 11:00 Thursday morning. Thank goodness for the cell phone!
I'm so glad I got all my laundry done on Tuesday. Also, we had filled the tanks in the motorhome so we could take a shower (not a very long one, though) and use the toilet. I'm having a hard time convincing my mom to just throw the plastic forks and spoons away instead of washing them to use again.
We went to Hy-Vee tonight (Wilson Ave SW) and they were emptying out the freezers and coolers of everything that got ruined because of the power outage. They wouldn't even let you back into that section, it was roped off. No eggs, no milk, no frozen juice, bare shelves in the bakery and deli section, nothing in the salad bar, no Chinese, no pizza. It was kind of eerie.
I am fearful for those people downstream from us who still have to go through the flooding and the aftermath.
I'm in Marion (Outside Cedar Rapids) and I'm dry. Our main problem has been losing internet connection for a couple of days and the phone line has been acting weird.
Right now I'm feeling so very lucky that we didn't have to worry about sandbagging or evacuating. I'd hate having to think about losing stamps and finished projects etc.

We know at least 3 people/families in Czech Village that will be lucky to salvage anything from their homes. In fact, they'll be lucky if they can save the structure. We're guessing that many homes and buildings in Czech Village will simply be bulldozed. My brother has friends in Palo who have lost everything except what they were able to get out of the house (same with one friend in Czech Village whom we have heard from).
A LSS here in Omaha is trying to find a way for us to donate household items, etc to those who lost them in the floods. Some people don't have insurance that covers flooding.
I'm watching this thread closely, hoping you are all staying safe. Keep us posted!
Hi, I am from St. Louis and vividly remember the flooding around here in '93. We are expecting some along the Missouri River (the one closest to my house but far enough away that we should have no problems) ... my thoughts and prayers are with everyone suffering and dealing with the flood waters and constant rain! Be safe!
I'm far away in MD but am thinking of all of you in Iowa who are dealing with all the flooding and devastation in your areas. I pray that you all stay safe and that you all have better weather soon!
Another former Iowan here - I grew up in Janesville and graduated from ISU. Still have a lot of family in the area and have been closely following all this weather news ever since the tornado in Parkersburg. I am heartbroken for all those who are affected by this. I simply cannot wrap my brain around all I am seeing on TV and the 'net. And the Boy Scouts? So sad! It just keeps getting worse. I'm praying for sunshine up there!!
Oh, and Shirley - my brother and sister-in-law have lived in Sumner for about 30 years so I've been there many times. They were dealing with water in the basement not long before graduation, as they had to get it dried out and carpet replaced in time for the party. I'm sure now that doesn't seem nearly so bad when you see what so many others are facing.
Updated in today's paper that we are going to crest now on Wednesday at 25.1' which will tie with the '93 flood. People have been barricading and sandbagging for the past few days downtown. Hopefully they will hold so it doesn't destroy too much of the downtown area.
Saying prayers for everyone up north of us as we wait for the waters to crest here.

From an article in the paper today, it sounds like MOST people don't have flood insurance, especially those in the 500-year flood plain. Those in the 100-year flood plain are more likely to have insurance IF they had a mortgage that required it. Sounds like even a lot of the businesses downtown don't have flood insurance, because they never imagined needing it.
Two of the areas hardest hit, Czech Village and Time Check, are not ritzy neighborhoods and many of the people who live there are lower income or elderly. It's going to be a while before they can even think about replacing their home and/or anything in it. It will probably be a week or more before the water recedes enough for them to even get to the houses to make any kind of assessment.
For people who would like to help, this was on the Cedar Rapids Gazette website this morning. No doubt the information will be updated as time progresses and needs change, so I would keep checking back.
Hi again from the GC area. It was sunny and windy here most of the a.m., but KCRG just issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Grundy County and probably a dozen others. My aunt and uncle are at a wedding in Bondurant, and will be heading home to CR later this aft. I'm passing along all the closings to them as the day progresses. To everyone, hang in there, and let this thread know if there's ANYTHING any of us can do to help.
Blessings,
I was born and raised in timecheck area.300 M ave nw
My church St Patricks and the hospital I was born at Mercy hospitals is flooded. my six children and grandchildren were also born there.
To have so much gone is loss of my whole life. I am
So glad my mom and dad have passed on. It would break their heart. because we as a family faced so many floods in that area.
But you are right it was a home that they could afford; and raise 11 children and with a close neighbor hood.
We were all different races and work and played together.
We never knew predjucies.
A wonderful place for families.
MissIowa I think you sound like quite a gal.
Someday I would love to meet you.
A singer thats wonderful.
Awww, thanks! And heck yes, we will have to meet! We're practically neighbors. Maybe once the waters recede and roads get open, we can meet somewhere for lunch, or maybe at All About Pictures, the new scrapbooking place on Center Point Road.
I can't believe that St. Pat's new building has water up to the roof. How sad. My neighbor told me that St. Ludmila's is going to start a daily soup kitchen for people in our area. Last night we walked down to where the flooding ended at 20th Avenue SW. A friend of my mom's died just last week (her funeral was Thursday and we couldn't even go). Her house is about the first house on Hamilton Street to NOT be flooded. Well, there may be water in the basement, but they certainly did not get water on the first floor. How fortunate for her sons who will be finalizing her estate, having to sell the house, etc.
By the way the avatar picture is my daughter sarah.
and her 2wk old baby Lily. She was born 2 wks ago

Holy Moly! She is a wee little thing! Sending best wishes to mama and babe.
Wow so many people in the area. That is amazing. And I agree that we should seriously think about a meet once all this is over with and we can get around safely.

West Des Moines checking in and we are high and dry! Thank goodness. I can't say as much for my DM relatives! We were driving down i-80 last night and it was mind blowing how far out of its banks the Des Moines river was, I would say at least 1 mile each way. Farm and baseball fields looked like lakes! Hopefully this weekend stays dry!
I'm not in Iowa but am a neighbor in Omaha.....the flooding sucks....the boy scout camp was horrible. It has been a bad year for the weather. I have a few friends in Iowa but haven't been able to get a hold of them, hopeful that everything is okay.
This website is still so new that there isn't a whole lot on it yet, and some of the initial information is geared toward those people whose homes have been flooded. However, there is a "Volunteer Information Coming Soon" link.
For those who asked about how they could help, this is another place you may want to check for advice on what kind of assistance is needed.
In the good news department: I get to take a shower tomorrow! :p
After this is over, I say that all us Iowa Ladies get together to do something positive - like stamp and scrap!! I live in Sumner.
Shirley -- this sounds like a wonderful idea! I'm game!
I live in Muscatine, Iowa -- about 45 minutes southeast of Iowa City. Cedar Rapids is very close to my heart; I attended Kirkwood and also worked at Mercy Medical Center for 4 years, from 2002-2006. So I have many friends in the area and know it well! I have been following the news online at KCRG and the Gazette because where I live, we get Davenport news stations. The pictures are just heartbreaking. And can you imagine evacuating a hospital as large as Mercy? Wow!
Right now, I work as an RN at the VA Hospital in Iowa City. I haven't been able to get to work since Saturday -- every road out of Muscatine is closed due to flooding. I feel horrible, because I know they are in a terrible staffing crunch and need my help! My husband joked that I need to hire a helicopter to take me.
My husband and I lived in Iowa City for 4 years, so I know the area well, and the pictures of the flooding there are astounding. My BIL works for University Security, and he has put in almost 70 hours this week. 16 buildings on the U of I campus are flooded, including the art campus where he works.
Although the Mississippi here in Muscatine is flooding, thankfully our house is high and dry.
I live 15 minutes west of Davenport and work in Iowa City at the University of Iowa and today was supposed to be my first day back to work after my 12 week maternity leave...
But the University is closed and only essential employees are supposed to report to work... I'm one of those employees... But the only way I can get there is going to be about a 6 hour drive (one way) due to I-80 being closed... So I get to work from home this week...
But all non-essential employees have the week off with pay...
I talked to one of my co-workers today and she said the river has crested about 1.5 feet lower than they originally thought, which is a good thing...
I've heard that Cedar Rapids has way more damage than Iowa City... They are comparing the damage to Hurricane Katrina...
It is amazing yet so sad to see what the water looks like. My kids and I were filling sandbags down by the Mississippi river yesterday. It was hard to believe what was already underwater. Our efforts felt like just a drop in the bucket, but we did what we could.
My heart goes out to all of you. The people I've seen on the news, however, make me proud to be an American. People helping themselves, people helping their neighbors, lack of looting, in short... Americans stepping up to the challenge of what's been thrown at them with minimal finger pointing and boo-hooing. My hats off to the people of Iowa!

Jen, what a small world. My hometown is Muscatine. My family still lives there although I am in Ft Dodge. Spoke with my Dad yesterday and he said the same thing, "We can't get out of here, all of the roads are closed."
Best of luck everyone. The weather is, at least, cooperating.
Warning to those of you downstream from Cedar Rapids on the Cedar River.
STAY OUT OF THE WATER! It is nasty and full of all kinds of things that you do not want to come in contact with: all manner of debris, chemicals, toxins, untreated waste water, who knows what all. It is not safe.
We were by the DesMoines river yesterday and could see all manner of debris. The water smelled like oil, and we could see a layer of oil on top of the water.

We will have more injuries and problems NOW, after the waters have receded, due to all the debris and damage left behind.
