Zoetrope Card

by Michele Reynolds

Create the illusion of motion with a spinning piece.

Supplies

  • Punches, or dies (2 3/8" Scallop Circle Punch, 1 1/4" circle punch and Petite Curly Label Punch used here)
  • Cardstock, So Saffron and More Mustard used here
  • Small stamp images, Stampin’ Up!’s Itty Bitties used here
  • Inks, Soft Suede and Early Espresso used here
  • Paper piercing tool
  • Piercing mat
  • Baker’s twine or other thin string (Early Espresso used here)
  • Sticky strip, or other strong adhesive
  • Shaker frames, or other dimensional adhesive
  • Window sheets or transparencies
  • Brads,Designer Builder Brads used here
  • Big Shot die cutting machine, or other die cutting machine (optional)/li>
  • Embossing folders optional

Step-by-Step

  1. Step 1

Punch a 2 3/8" Scallop Circle from card stock. Pierce a hole in the center of the circle for a brad . Do NOT insert a brad yet though.

  2. Step 2

Stamp small images in a spiral pattern radiating out from the center of the circle.

  3. Step 3

Cut about 2 feet of Baker’s Twine. Adhere one end to the back of the stamped scallop circle near the center.

  4. Step 4

Carefully remove the center circle and two smallest rings from one of the Shaker Frames. Do NOT separate the circles from each other. Adhere the circles to the back of the stamped scallop circle in the center by pressing the sticky side to the card stock.

  5. Step 5

Cut a circle from a piece of Window Sheet about 1 1/4" in diameter.

    Tip:
Punch a scrap of card stock with the 1 1/4" Circle Punch. Trace the circle onto the Window Sheet using a Sharpie Marker. Cut out the circle using Paper Snips.

  6. Step 6

Remove the protective backing from the Shaker Frame circles. Adhere the Window Sheet circle to the Shaker Frame circles.

  7. Step 7

Cut a piece of card stock to 3 1/4" square.

    Optional:
Dry emboss the square with an embossing folder of your choice.

  8. Step 8

Cut a 1" square from a piece of Window Sheet. Adhere the Window Sheet square to the center of the card stock square.

  9. Step 9

Place the scallop circle with the Shaker Frames attached in the center of the card stock square with the right side up. Pierce a hole through all the layers using the original poked hole as a guide.

  10. Step 10

Insert a brad through all the layers and secure it in place by folding the prongs flat.

    Tip:
Brads with long prongs work best!

  11. Step 11

Punch two identical, small shapes from card stock. Write or stamp the word “Pull” on each of them. Adhere the two shapes together around the loose end of the Baker’s Twine.

  12. Step 12

Carefully wind the Baker’s Twine around the Shaker Frame pieces behind the scallop circle image. Leave the tag hanging free so it can easily be grabbed and pulled. Pull the tag to see the zoetrope effect. The faster you pull, the cooler it looks!

  13. Step 13

Rewind the Baker’s Twine around the Shaker Frame pieces and finish the project.

Variations

  1. Use small punched pieces instead of small stamped images to create the spiral pattern.

This is SO cool! If I don't have the shaker frame circles, could I just use a piece of fun foam to raise it up?
Shelly Hickox  |  Wed Feb 6, 2013 at 8:43 AM
Thanks for all the nice comments so far. I hope the video helps explain how it works. The round Shaker Frames are available from Stampin' Up!, just contact a Demonstrator or go directly to Stampin' Up!'s website. You'll get a better deal if you choose a Demonstrator! A piece of fun foam might work as long as you sandwich it between the Window Sheets so it has smooth surfaces to rub against. Be sure to only adhere it to one piece of Window Sheet though or it won't spin.

Hi Michelle,

Do you sell the shaker circles? I have some clear shaker circles but yours look different.
gail  |  Wed Feb 6, 2013 at 11:02 AM
Yes, the Shaker Frames (shaker circles) are sold by Stampin' Up! Just contact a Demonstrator or go directly to Stampin' Up!'s website.

Have never seen these Shaker frames over here and don't have access to SU demonstrator any more, as they are very rare here ( I am not keen on the few SU products I've seen anyway), so wonder how thick the frame is so that I can use a substitute, such as fun foam as someone suggested.
Any other ideas for a substitute as this looks like fun to do, please?

cool tutorial!tfs

Fun foam might work. I'm not sure. I only use Stampin' Up! products since I am a Demonstrator. Perhaps some other sort of dimensional adhesive.

This looks like a really fun project. Hope to give it a try soon.

Love this tutorial, BUT . . . you listed the Itty Bitty stamps but NOT the "She believed that she could so she did" stamp that you used on this card, which I Love! Is this a SU stamp? I looked in my catalog and couldn't find it. I want this stamp!
Carolee Carter  |  Wed Feb 6, 2013 at 7:21 PM
I was told to list only the products used to make the "zoetrope" portion of the card, not all the additional products that were used to finish the project. The "She Believed..." stamp is included in a Set called Feel Goods by Stampin' Up! It is for sale right now in the Spring Catalog which is good until May 31, 2013. Contact your Stampin' Up! Demonstrator or me (if you don't have a Demo) or go directly to the Stampin' Up! website.

Love this! My granddaughter would absolutely go gaga over it. Have a somewhat unrelated question. What is surface you are working on i the video? Looks like a nice large surface that will not move around. Also, looks like you have some sort of paper on top of it. Could you tell me what both are? I have been looking for something other than the old computer paper that moves all over my tabletop as I work. Thanks for your help.

I was working on a Cutting Mat that used to be sold by Stampin' Up! Unfortunately, that item is no longer available. As for the paper, it was a sheet of Grid Paper that is still sold by Stampin' Up! It is 11" x 17" and comes in a pad of 100 sheets. You can rip off one sheet at a time or work on top of the pad. Contact your Stampin' Up! Demonstrator (or me if you don't have one) or go directly to the Stampin' Up! website to order online.
