Witch’s Hat

by Peggy McCurry

Create a fun decorative hat for Halloween

Supplies

  • Three 12" x12" pieces of patterned paper
  • One 12" x12" piece of black cardstock
  • 4" x 9" Styrofoam or papier mache cone
  • Scoring tool
  • Scor-Tape™ or other strong adhesive
  • Tombow Mono Multi Glue, or other liquid glue
  • Assorted ribbons and fibers
  • Buttons and stickers
  • Black Ink

Step-by-Step

  1. Step 1

Wrap styrofoam cone with one of the pieces of patterned paper.

  2. Fold around cone overlapping seam edge one half inch. Cut off excess. Glue seam.

  3. Step 2

Cut a nine inch circle out of a different patterned paper and a piece of black cardstock. Glue the two circles together to form the hat base. Roll the edges of the base to give a wavy appearance to the brim of the hat.

  4. Step 3

Attach the cone shaped piece to hat base with glue.

  5. Step 4

Cut three strips of a third patterned paper 2" x 10".

  6. Sponge edge with black ink. Score paper strips every half inch.

  7. Step 5

Fan fold strips and adhere together with Scor-tape™ to form circle.

  8. Step 6

Place fan folded circle over top of cone piece and adhere to hat base with glue.

  9. Step 7

Adhere themed items to hat (Stickers and Buttons for this one) and tie assorted fibers and ribbons around bottom of cone.

I work in a nursing home and I think these would be adorable if made on a smaller scale and used as place cards for the dinner table and put the residents name on the buckle of the hat.
These would also be fun to stuff the hat with some sort of trinket or candy and use as a party favor for a childs Halloween party, maybe by making a tabbed area on the bottom for access and stick the prize up in the cone.

I will be making one for these for sure, probably 2. My sister goes all out for Halloween and would love this. Great idea Becky about making smaller ones. Definitely giving this a shot!

OOooo... There's a "party hat" shape on my new Artiste cartridge. I bet I could use it to make these in all kinds of sizes. It would be cute to have a bunch of little ones in the window hanging from fishing line at different levels.
