Crochet Hearts

by Bev Rousch

Learn how to crochet a heart embellishment.

Supplies

  • Yarn

  • Crochet Hook

  • Scissors

Step-by-Step

  1. Step 1

Make a "magic ring" by looping yarn and then insert crochet hook.

  2. Step 2

Wrapping yarn around your hook and pull through (making one chain), then repeating twice more for 3 total chains.

  3. Step 3

Hook a Double Crochet (DC) stitch by wrapping yarn over hook, inserting hook into magic ring and then pulling yarn over hook again, leaving you with 3 loops around the hook. Wrap yarn around hook again and pull yarn through first two loops. Now you have to loops left on your hook. Wrap yarn around the hook and pull through the last two loops, leaving you with one loop. You've just completed a Double Crochet (DC) stitch. The remaining loop is your starting point for your next stitch.

  4. Step 4

Stitch 9 more Double Crochet stitches into the "magic ring".

  5. Step 5

After your 9th Double Crochet stitch, chain 2 (as instructed in step 2). Cut yarn ends, leaving about 4 inch tails. Insert hook into the center of the heart, wrap yarn over the hook at the back and pull through the last loop on your hook, finishing off your last stitch.

  6. Step 6

Drop both tails through the "magic ring" so that they are at the back of your heart. Close the"magic ring" by pulling on the tail end of the yarn.

  7. Step 7

Knot tails together and cut tails to suit your project.

  8. Note:
Here are 3 completed hearts using various yarns and their corresponding hook sizes.
Large heart: Super Bulky (6) yarn, size 9mm/N hook. 2"x2.25" heart.
Medium heart: Medium yarn (4), size 5mm/H hook. 1.5"x 1.5" heart.
Small heart: Baker's Twine, size 2.75 mm/1 hook. 1"x1" heart.

  9. Step 8

Use the finished heart on your project.

RE: CROCHET VALENTINE HEARTS
Can you please tell me the name, manufacturer and where to order the stamp (little cat in a basket pulling yarn) for the Valentine Crochet Heart card?

Thanks for sharing this tutorial. I've been making similar hearts. The pattern I had found via Pinterest starts out with Treble Crochets. I may have to try this one. I love making the little hearts. They are so easy and fun to use on my paper-crafting projects. smile

The little hearts are so cute. I knit preemie caps for an air transport and medical group. I just might make some and put them on the caps.
Very good instruction too. You did a great job. Thank you.

To give a little more 'point' to the heart, make 4 dc, 1 treble crochet, 4 dc. This gives a wee bit more shape to the heart.
Thanks for this tutorial
