I am entering Ways to Use It-WT643...stars in my night sky; Monthly Themes-April 2017...I challenged myself to try a watercolor background with purposeful placement of the colors; and Alphabet Round 7-Letter L-DD7ABC15L...using some type of light idea.
I water colored all over with Crushed Curry ink with a second layer only in the area for the lantern light, using upward brush strokes. My second color for the light was to flick the area using Strawberry Slush, using only upward brush strokes. My final step was the galaxy-night sky around the lantern light. I flicked small brush strokes toward my lantern light all around it. Colors used in order: Old Olive, Island Indigo, and lots of Night of Navy to finish. I added stars to the night sky, using a paint brush and snapping the handle with my fingers. The goal was to sprinkle my stars in random sizes, from tiny to very small. I used White Pearl Metallic Folk Art acrylic paint watered down.
This background was a challenge for me. I did a trial run, because it had to be so precise. In my second attempt, I needed to get my lantern light in exactly the right area without the night sky bleeding to far into it. All in all, I'm pretty happy I challenged myself, and I'm fairly pleased with my result.

Thank you all for the wonderful, heartwarming comments on Lantern card. It was a learning experience and I'm just stubborn enough to keep at it until I'm happy with it! But, that's how you learn...tenacity!

Oh my goodness, this is a beautiful card. I like the effect of the upward brush strokes. The light does look like it's radiating from the lantern. I could stare at this for quite some time. Thanks for all of the details you provided. I am sure if I attempt this it will not turn out as beautiful and captivating as yours, but I might just give it a go and see what I get. You created a masterpiece. Thanks for sharing! Congrats on making the favorites thread. I can definitely see why you were chosen so many times!
