For Dawn's no stamps vsn challenge, and for this week's odd sayings free-for-all challenge. Around here, "up river" has a specific meaning. We've a region about twenty miles southeast of town, centered around the Row (rhymes with how now brown cow) River. Row, meaning feud. Lots of feuds over history-- I taught grade school up river for five years, and learned to respect/love the folk. That's not always the case with those of us who live in town.
Up river means lots of lumber, some gold mining, and other less reputable, risky endeavors. If you know what I mean.

A wonderful forest and love the starry night. Very interesting post, too.

You created a wonderful woodland scene with the river flowing through it. I'm so glad to gave the explanation for your odd saying - I had never heard that before and I grew up with LOTS of colloquialisms.
