This card was made for Sketch Saturday Challenge #351 (http://sketchsaturday.blogspot.com/2.../week-651.html ). When I saw the sketch I thought of beams of sunlight streaming down through water. Of course, that led me to the beautiful Stampin' Up! (SU) stamp set "Magical Mermaid".
I started by stamping the mermaid onto white cardstock with black ink, then began coloring her with Copic markers (specific colors listed below). I don't have a die to cut her out, so scanned her with my Brother ScanNcut digital cutting machine, then cut her out, plus two additional blank outlines to stack and glue under her for increased since of depth.
The background is a piece of light blue cardstock that I used a blending brush and white ink to create the sunbeams in the upper left. I used scrap pieces of cardstock to protect the area of the card I didn't want white ink to get on while blending. The "bubbles" were stamped in light blue randomly on the background.
The "mermaid scales" at the bottom were die cut using an SU die on a Big Shot. The "scales" were glued to the very bottom of the card and then trimmed using paper snips.
Finally, the birthday sentiment was stamped using the same black ink as was used for the mermaid.
I am rating the difficulty of this card as a "3" out of a possible "5" due to the need to hand color the mermaid and careful sponging.
