I wanted to make a different kind of shaker card, so started out with the idea of raindrop sprinkles falling all around (but not under) an umbrella. The umbrella from the Stampin' Up! "Umbrella Weather" framelits die set was placed at an angle on a 3-7/8"x 5-1/2" piece of Whisper White cardstock, and then placed onto the Big Shot platform an an angle so that the umbrella ran through head-on. This allowed me to run the die through only as far as the tips of the umbrella without cutting the bottom edge. I wanted to leave a "rain shadow" under the umbrella. I then used a paper trimmer and cut the sides outside the umbrella's "shadow" off completely.
Next, I stamped the umbrella onto the cutout using SU Calypso Coral ink with my MISTI to ensure exact placement and the ability to re-stamp if it needed to be darker orange. I filled in the circles on the umbrella by hand using a Calypso Coral Stampin' Write Marker. The handle was hand colored with a brown marker, and the pole was colored gray with a #2 pencil.
Next, I cut out the square frame using the two largest SU Framelits Square dies to create a frame of Calypso Coral. I glued a piece of clear acetate slightly smaller than the frame onto the back of the frame. Then, glued the umbrella piece onto the back of the frame at the angle I wanted (just around the edges so the glue doesn't show through the window). Thin strips of adhesive foam were attached on the back of the frame all around, leaving no gaps for raindrops to escape.
Raindrops were created by completely coating a scrap of SU Marina Mist cardstock with Versamark ink, then covering it with clear embossing powder. This was heat set, then the same thing done to the back of the scrap. This made the paper thicker, and if the raindrops flipped over to their back in the shaker, they would be the same color and glossiness. I then ran this glossy panel through the Big Shot using the two raindrop dies five times to create approximately 60 individual raindrops.
About six of the raindrops were glued onto the card base so they would show through the window. Then, I put the remainder loose raindrops in the center of the card before taking the protective paper off the foam strips and sticking it onto the card base with the raindrops trapped inside.
The rest of the glossy Marina Mist panel was trimmed to size and glued to the bottom of the card front.
The sentiment is from the "Weather Together" stamp set. It was stamped with Calypso Coral ink onto a scrap of Whisper White, and a flag tail cut by hand with paper snips. This was glued to a piece of Calypso Coral as a mat, then attached to the card front with adhesive foam strips to raise it up to the same level as the shaker frame.
The card went together relatively fast (except for chasing all those little raindrops!). I rate it as a difficulty "3" out of "5".
