The sketch this week featured three hexagons arranged vertically on the left of the design. So, right away I thought "honeycomb", and the card evolved from there. I pulled out my Stampin' Up! Hexagon Hive die and ran it through my Big Shot using So Saffron cardstock. I mounted the hive die cut onto an SU Hello Honey panel that was cut just a smidgen larger than the die cut itself. I thought the darker yellow would make the honeycomb appear to have depth.
Next, I stamped three hexagons using stamps from the SU Six-Sided Sampler set. Since I wanted the card to be a birthday card for both guys and gals, I did the stamping with Memento Tuxedo Black ink on So Saffron cardstock. Since I don't have a hexagon punch (yet), I hand cut the hexagons out leaving a small yellow border around all the edges. Not sure why, but the "empty" hexagon stamp was slightly smaller than the dotted ones, so I decided to stamp the greeting inside it so that hexagon would be oriented with one of its points "up". The birthday greeting was from the SU stamp set called Honeycomb Hello.
Now, knowing how wide the left vertical panel needed to be once I had my hexagons cut out, I cut the panel from Hello Honey cardstock. The sketch required some type of vertical "edging" or border to separate the two panel areas, so I used a Fiskars scallop punch and punched what I needed from SU Basic Black cardstock.
The black scallop border was glued to the vertical Hello Honey panel using Tombow glue, then this assembled panel was glued to the left side of the die cut honeycomb. Then, the three stamped hexagons were attached to this vertical panel using Adhesive Foam Strips to give the card more depth. Note that the center hexagon is mounted with the point toward the top (both to create the unexpected, and to minimize the difference in size between the dotted hexagons and the "empty" hexagon with the sentiment stamped inside it.
The final step was to create the honeybee. I did this by first stamping the bee from the SU Dragonfly Dreams set using Memento Tuxedo Black ink onto Whisper White cardstock. Then using the matching be die from the Detailed Dragonfly set, I die cut the bee. Using Baja Breeze and Barely Banana Stampin' Write Markers, I colored in all the white on the bee (yellow for the body, and blue for the wings). The final step was to mount the bee using Adhesive Foam Strips so the bee's body was centered over a solid honeycomb piece of the diecut hive background.
