Mary is our Color Challenge hostess today, and she has given us a slushee-wonderful color combination of Cucumber Crush, Watermelon Wonder, and Hello Honey. As I used these colors, I realized how sherbet-like they are—just like rainbow sherbet. How convenient, that the dessert option is to show a favorite summertime treat , such as ice cream, popsicle, snow cone, cupcake, etc.
I am absolutely in love with this adorable set, Penguins in Paradise. I chose this little guy with his popsicle for my subject, but I also created a very unusual background using mixed media.
Every week, I look at the Friday Mixed Media challenge. Most of the time, I think, "Oh, that's too hard for me." But last Friday, the challenge was to get over my fear of mixed media, and try something new. So I did. First, I took a piece of mixed media cardstock, covered with gel medium, and stuck down a piece of Typeset Specialty designer paper. Then I covered that with Gesso, and let it dry. I tried streaks of the challenge colors with Zig Clean Color Real Brush markers, but the color wasn't bold enough. So after that dried, I covered it with a wash of similar colors from my set of Zig Kuretake Gamsai Tambi watercolors, and let that dry. Finally, I covered the entire sheet with Golden Glass Bead Gel. I love this stuff! It has teensy tiny glass beads in a medium that turns clear when it dries. It gave my panel the look of sherbet—or at least that's what I was aiming for.
I cut out my tree, penguin and beach ball with my Silhouette Portrait, then colored them with Copic Markers, and stamped the sentiment with Watermelon Wonder ink.
One more thing, getting back to the Color Challenge—my favorite summertime treat isn't actually a popsicle, it's being in Hawaii! ;-)
Thanks for stopping by, and please play along with us this week!
