This is my card for the MIX53 challenge "Loving Layers" - to build up 3 or more layers of mixed media product to make your project.
Dina shared a great tutorial on the Acrylic Batik technique, and that's where I started. After stamping the Hero Arts background stamp with VersaMark and embossing with white ep, I applied turquoise, yellow and orange craft acrylics with an old gift card. I guess I was a little overzealous and ended up with a pretty muddy looking background, so I added a little more turquoise and orange and blended them a little more gently. I let it dry and polished the paint off of the embossing with a soft, damp rag, and ran the Distress Brushed Pewter Stain dauber over the entire piece.
I placed the swirl stencil over the piece and inked through the stencil with VersaMark. I removed the stencil, applied the deep impression ep and heat set. I painted white acrylic paint over everything, let it get almost dry and rubbed with a baby wipe. This cleaned the paint off the swirl embossing, and also knocked back some of the paint from the batik layer, revealing some subtle red and blue shades.
I really like the look of this and didn't want to cover it up, so I used vellum for the sentiment panel and butterflies. The sentiment was stamped with HA Unicorn and heat embossed with white detail ep. The batik panel is mounted on a shimmery copper cs using foam tape for dimension; I added half-pearls to complete the card.
As always, thanks for looking!

Gorgeous background, Jody! Now I NEED to go and try that technique! And I am glad I am not the only one who, once a background is made, hates to cover it up! The vellum butterflies look great here.

This is beautiful. The velum butterflies with the pearls are the perfect accent for your georgeous bkg. The deeper color with the swirls on top looks so 3D. I love it.

This knocked my socks off! I love when you get done with a background that can stand on its own. This is so pretty! Thanks for playing the Mix-ability challenge this week!
