Default TLC374 ~ Stamping Nostalgia ~ (04/23/12)

Hi Stampers!

Just like technology grows by leaps and bounds every year, so does the art/craft we share. It's hard to believe that just a little over six years ago, there was no Cuttlebug. Then the nestabilities and subsequent dies exploded on the scene. I remember when I started stamping... eyelets were the rage and brads were hardly heard of. And designer paper!! When I first started, they were limited as well.

~ Stamping Nostalgia ~

So our challenge today is going to be to make a card as if we were back in the early days of stamping. NO EMBOSSING, NO DIE CUTS, NO PEARLS, NO SEWING, Nothing that was not available way back when.
  • You can use ribbon
  • You can use ONE piece of patterned paper (try to use a retired piece!)
  • You can use eyelets
  • You can faux sew
  • Try doodling to add interest
  • Try sponging to add depth

Here is my sample:

~ Fruit of the Spirit ~

When uploading, please use KEYWORD TLC374 (no spaces)

You can view the entire TLC374 gallery HERE.

Have fun!

This is a great challenge thanks Holly. Mmm, my eyelets haven't seen the light of day for a while - might have to use them.

Fun challenge, Holly....although I have not been stamping as long as many of you....so lots of goodies were available to me from the gitgo! : ) I kept my card pretty simple since I was combining your challenge with CAS.

I found the eyelets (took a while to remember how to use them), some old DSP and a sketch that was one of my first ever. Thanks Holly for making us think way outside our current square. Here is mine.

Fun challenge! I started stamping in 1997 and still have some magazines from then. Here are some of the first things I lacquered and learned to use:

--heat gun and EP (a store demo sold me on stamping...this as so cool, like magic!)
--dry embossing on vellum with brass stencils and stylus
--scissors for cutting fancy edges on paper
--fiskars crimper
--shaker cards using acetate from report covers and foam core. I don't recommend this, I never managed to make one that didn't look like I had hacked it out with a butter knife!
--stamping in white and embossing in white on vellum, then coloring opposite side with tombow markers for muted look
--southwest, "tribal" and Asian themed stamps were very popular with those who "didn't do cute". If you did do cute, there were a lot of teddy bears and "country cute" images where everything had patches and round pink circles on cheeks
--mail art, faux postage etc was very popular
--building scenes (landscapes) out of various stamps, also masking.

My first Stampin Up sets were the southwestern one with cactus and chili peppers, and the "hello spring" set with bunny and tulips. My first stamp ever was an All Night Media Laurel Burch sun.

DPs from scrapbook papers were very "country cute" and were mostly plaids and polka dots and not much else.

I can't wait to get home in the AM and play with some of my oldest stuff! Great challenge!

What a coincidence! I was trying to find an unlock code in my computer last night and a search brought up some way old cards. Embossing is the only thing I'll find it really hard not to use today ;-), and maybe pearls. Fun challenge, Holly.

Awesome challenge. Going "old school" is a great challenge. I love all the tried and true stamping techniques also like stamped collages and stamped backgrounds. How about heat embossing? Will be acceptable for this challenge.

Mary Jo McGraw's first card book, my stamping "bible" back then! The cover shows what was cutting edge when I got started. I think my copy is still around here somewhere, I think I will be using it to make a card today!

Holly- Great challenge. As I had already worked on my card, I do have some real stitching, but otherwise kept to the challenge rules, so forgive me for that.

Great challenge today. I must have started stamping around the same time because I can remember collecting eyelets in every color I could find : ) And I remember using NO designer paper at that time. Will see what I can come up with!

Holly this is a great challenge. I started stamping in 1995. Where I live the only thing available was a very limited # of stamps from the fabric store and white card stock from the office supply store. Everything was stamped in black and colored in with colored pencils! 17 yrs. later, I'm still an addict! LOL A friend (who later became my sister in law) asked me if I wanted to come to a StampinUP! party (this was in 2000). I was like--THEY DO PARTIES!!! I went and my first set was a mini 2 step rose set that I don't even know the name of now. Maybe I'll use that set for my card. I became a demonstrator in 2004 too. Once my DH felt comfortable for me to be gone and him alone with the kids. I will be back to play later! Thanks again!

I decided to do another card for this challenge but this time decided to do one as a pre-Cuttlebug "stamping nostalgia" version and one with the Cuttlebug which is how I'd more likely use the same stamp today. Here's the pre-Cuttlebug version for the challenge:
