Acrylic paint is what I usually use. Occasionally, I use pigment ink and clear embossing powder. You could also use glitter or metallic embossing powder.
I painted large-ish stars to use as table decor for a party. The paint itself was sparkly so I'm thinking you could look for paint that has the desired finish/effect already in it.
I have used cheap acrylic paint for total coverage or permanent ink if I want a wood grain finish. You might even be able to create detail with colored pencils, I've not tried it but they work well on craft sticks so should work on other unfinished wood surfaces.
Your question got me to thinking, I should grab my zip bag of wooden findings next time I use my gel plate.
are they solid form or open work?If they are solid form you can decoupage designer paper on them. Just adhere it, trim as close as possible, and then file down any remnants. if they are open work then i recommend painting them and/or using glitter glue or glitter embossing powder. Or you could paint them and then coat them with clear embossing powder or a clear dimensional glaze.

They are solid and the biggest one is 2" x 1-1/2"......I used one the size of 1-3/4" x 1-1/4". I applied some glue and sprinkled glitter over one and let it dry. Seems to be alright.
I prep them with gesso and then I can use any of my many coloring options because the surface is now ready to take on anything and have a true color - mica powder is really pretty but you need to seal it.
