I'm looking for ideas to make my pencils safe for travel. I've had some pencils break using the hard cases. Soft cases don't seem stable enough. Any ideas? What is everyone else using for keeping pencils safe when traveling. Traveling can be for a couple of weeks to just out and about daily. I have an art bag I carry with me but not sure how to keep the pencils secure.
I thought I would like adult coloring books and brought one and this case with my colored pencils on a 6-day trip overseas. I didn't have any pencils break, even with this squished in my backpack underneath the seat in front of me.

I put mine in the Thirty One Gifts Hanging Traveler Case. An idea that I got from Jennifer McQuire. Works really nice and able to store items to color as well.

The only thing I'll say for the TopRay case that I have -- other than the fact that it's cheap -- is that I like having an individual loop for every single pencil.
If I take one pencil out, I don't have to worry about three others falling out.
Not a problem on a desk, but not so great in a cramped airplane seat where you can't put everything flat on a table and if something falls on the floor, you can't easily get up and grab it.

I'm going to sound horrible, but I'm also going to say this, anyway. I get really annoyed with each pencil in its own elastic and having to futz with each one like that. I understand that it's easier to find the one you want, and protects them much better than my method, but I also know how impatient I am, so...
I just group a fistful - say reds or greens - and rubber band them together, then put them in the cheap soft-side zippered pouches and tuck them into my bag wherever they'll fit. So far breakage hasn't been a problem. What works for one, and all that... ;)

Wow, I'm even lower-tech than you! I ditch the rubber bands and go with freezer weight ziplock bags, quart size. If the pencils flop around in the bag, I'll add a piece of tape to snug up the bag on the outside (with a courtesy-tab so it can be reused).
This listing only shows black, blue and purple, but I got a black from this listing and a pink one on another page. I wanted them different so I would know which ones to grab. The don't hold all the pencils, 6 short, but there is a pocket where I put the others. It's not cute but it isn't ugly like some I saw. It has a study fabric outside and seems well sewn. The fabric has a slight heathered look that I really like. I plan to add some beaded dangles to make it look cuter. The Velcro panels inside come out for ease of use if you prefer. I can fit a fairly decent sized sharpener in there (Kum long point which I highly recommend) plus a couple of blender pens and erasers. I don't find the elastic holders fiddly at all. I just insert them from the bottom so the point goes in first.
I was looking at similar items recently. In some of the cases, the pencil holding panels are wider than they are tall, I went for one like that.
I have ordered cheap ebay one and plan to decorate it by stamping: I already have some Stazon. I think I will be able to use the Misti lid, so I can restamp if necessary.
I have also used Lumiere fabric paints in the past to brighten up a bead bag made out of the sort of material that some of these to be made of. I turned a black bag into a black, metallic purple and metallic green one.
If my stamping doesn't work out, Plan B is to overpaint it.
