What laser printer are you using? What cardstock? I read somewhere that certain Brother printers don't work well for this technique and that coated cardstock works best.
Laminators can make a difference in the heat they generate. As I use to do a lot of laminating and with heavy duty pouches I bought a more heavy duty laminator cThat I can actually change the temperature setting on. Not sure if that makes a difference to what you are doing as I havent tried this foil idea but just thought I would throw in my comment as I had a basic laminator then went for the more heavy duty one.

Count me in, I fell in love with Jennifer's laser foil technique. I already have the laser printer and a Your Story laminator. My laminator gets very hot, so I think it will be fine. I'm afraid my printer will be an issue, it's a Brother color. I had problems getting a dark black print to work with my stamp maker. Now I'm thinking I'll have the same problem getting a deep solid black for foiling. I'm awaiting foil arrival, and will have to report back on how it goes, I'm not very optimistic.:-(
I'm so glad you posted this. I too, tried this with my Fellowes laminator (which I love - it's amazing) but it obviously didn't heat enough - I got NO sticking at all. I read on the foil package that you should do it with an iron on the wool setting, which I read was between 300 and 350 degrees.
Mine is a pouch laminator, which has a lower top temperature, so I think that's my problem. Jennifer's is also much newer than mine (from what I can tell) and seems to be a more multi-purpose laminator, not just a pouch laminator.
I do have mine on the highest temp setting but if I try with the iron tomorrow and it works, I'll let you know!
No solution from me - just a comment that I find it so funny that heat-set foiling is back. This was something that was popular years and years ago, before I started stamping so it has to be at least 20 years. We would do gold lettering on invitations using our office laser printer. I guess at some point everything comes back around. : )

Yes! I remember being fascinated by the catalog with the printed papers for flyers and invites and wanting to try the foils - but we didn't have anything at work that we needed them for.
Michaels still had lots of foil on clearance so I picked up some gold and some silver- I don't have a laser printer OR a laminator so I'm going to have to try one of Jennifer's other techniques or print on friends laser and use an iron. A laminator is a possibility but I'm not getting a new printer just for one technique. My ink jet printer is fine and I can't justify a new printer.
I've read that a laminator with multiple heat settings, and one that is capable of laminating 10 mls is the best for foiling. Frank at Pulsar Pro FX recommends a Tamerica. It's about $140.00, shipped.

We used foils on ceramics almost 30 years ago! I also used a photocopier of some type to adhere the foil to photocopies. That was over 20 years ago. I love the way craft items find new uses in different markets. I actually think I will try the ironing. I have a laminator, but the iron seems easier to control.

LOL. Yeah, $140. Ain't gonna happen. I may go ahead and try the royal sovereign or maybe I'll decide this one is good enough.
Yes that's a little hefty. I'm looking at the newest Royal Sovereign, the ES1315. It's still not cheap, under $90.00, but can laminate 7ml. I have an old "Your Story", but don't know if it will get hot enough. I've read bad reviews on the "Your Story", I've only used it a few times and it's 5 years old. My foil is arriving Thirsday, I'll be trying it out then.
Ok I'm probably the only one who has no idea what this thread is all about since the OP just jumped right into a topic that I assume was on another thread. I'm so confused:confused::confused: Can someone clue me in? LOL

Here's the link to Jennifer's video that should bring you up to date.

Thanks Lydia and Annecards....That is sooo cool. I don't have a laser printer but I saw all Jennifers videos on the foiling and may try the other ideas. Thanks for steering me into the right direction!
Ok...new laser printer and laminator arrived today. I have had no time to play but perhaps tomorrow or Friday. I have to set up the printer first. So excited to try this!
I am chomping at the bit to try this. I have to wait til hubby is home this weekend to set up the printer to work wirelessly. I tried but I just dont understand the technical stuff. I have accumulated more foil in the last week than I will use in a lifetime! Its the fault of the ladies here who post links.....lol.
I went out and bought a laminator and a laser printer to do this. Aaaaagh so many problems! First attempts there were so many spots that didn't get covered. Then I read online to run it through laminator without a cover sheet. It was a bit tricky getting foil to stay in place but it worked! I think my laminator isn't hot enough. It is a 5 ml and I am beginning to think you really need a 7ml. I guess 10 ml would be even better. Now off to solve my next problem....laser printer has caused a conflict with my Silhouette so now it won't cut. LOL! I think I have waaaay too many machines!
I think the 7 ml laminators are hotter than the 5 ml. So when I didn't use a carrying sheet to feed the foil into my laminator more heat got to the foil. You are lucky you got pretty good coverage. I think that even a 5 ml laminator's temperature will vary slightly from brand to brand.
I had to reinstall the printer driver to get it to work with silhouette studio. I hope that doesn't mess up my silhouette driver. ugh. The laminator I have is 3 ml. Do they get hotter when they use thicker materials? I got a dot or two of spotty coverage but not too bad.
Yes they have to get hotter to bind the thicker 5, 7, and 10 pouches. The one I posted had a few little pinholes of black showing through, if you magnify the one I posted you can spot them. I used the 5 setting. I used the 7 setting on my second card, and the coverage was solid. I think it is true that every machine varies. I haven't tried my "Your Story", since I bought the Royal Sovereign 1315. I have to add, maybe I didn't let it warm up long enough on the first attempt. Overall, I was still happy with the end result on the 5 setting.
So hubby came home and set up my printer...I was so excited thinking I could play tomorrow then I got the call my fav aunt in the world died so we are making arrangements to fly to the midwest this week. I might get to, play on 3/21 when we return. I will get to it soon I guess...just trying to be patient.

Amber I am so sorry to hear about your loss. My prayers are with you and your family. Hugs
Thanks ladies so much! You all are so sweet. I just really want to start doing this technique so bad. I have aquired enough foil papers in the last week to do the outside of the house,..oh well it will be here when I get home next week. Lydia I love how you foiled on a printed background. Ladies please post your cards so we can see all your lovely work.
Hugs.
Heidi Swapp foil. I decided to watercolor background after application of foil. I used my heat gun so it looks more embossed to me. The butterflies were run through the laminator no heat gun. I love her foils.
I figured out how to use my stamps. This one is a Rubberneckers watercolor flower. I stamped the part I wanted to foil, scanned, printed, foiled, and then stamped the rest. Sorry the picture doesn't do it justice.
I finally got my laser printer and laminator out of the box Both work beautifully.....
I bought the 12" version of the one Jennifer McGuire uses. Less than $30 on Amazon
