I know have a pile of Cuttlebug embossing folders and quite a few Ellison texturizing plates. I also have a Big Shot and not the Cuttlebug.
In my opinion, and after many tests. The cuttlebug embossing folders are far superior and give a much deeper, clearing emboss design than the Ellison texturizing plates. When I use the plates, I have to add another piece of paper as a "shim" to the recommended "sandwich". I think our cardstock is plenty thick enough and this shouldn't be necessary.
I like some of the texturizing plates designs better, but they just don't make a nice, deep, crisp emboss.
oh..very interesting to read this, I am wanting a big shot so was wondering about the texturizing plates as they look so cool! Glad to hear this. what did you use as an extra shim?

Anything with the Big boss was too think, (ie the plastic clear cutting plates). The best option was another piece of cardstock. Embosing on SU cardstock and using a second as a shim gave a pretty good impression and I had to use some elbow grease to get it through. I think a third piece might push the Ellison to its limit.
The cuttlebug folders work on my ellison using the plates the machine came with and the embossing is crisp and clear.
Since the folders are two-sided, I think they work better than the texture plates with the rubber pad (ellison rubber pad).
This is my experience as well. I think if I had tried the texture plates *first*, I might have loved them. But after using the CB folders, the others seem like too much work for too little effect.
Are you using the rubber mat that goes under the Big Shot Impressions too? Just wondering as I have just purchased some of these and if they don't work will return them. I love my Cuttlebug folders on the otherhand, they work beautifully with the Big Shot and I am having so much fun playing with them.

Let me start by saying that since I don't have any of these products (yet ;) ), you are welcome to take my words with a big grain of salt.
After everything I've read and heard about the Ellison/Big Shot texturizing plates, it's my understanding that they are not supposed to create as raised an image as the embossing plates/folders/stencils. I'm guessing that you could compare it to textured cardstock (such as the Bazzill Basics with the linen texture) vs. embossed cardstock (I think K & Co makes some).
In fact, if you look at the Ellisondesign.com product page, their Big Impressions texture plates have a separate listing from their Easy Emboss stencils.
I'll admit that I could be wrong, but that's my interpretation of how the Ellison products are supposed to work.
They work, but I have to mist my cardstock to get any impression at all--and it isn't physically possible for the texture plates to give as deep an impression as I've become used to with the folders! :-) Yes, I'm using the BISK (in my CB)--but my Bug seems to be a bit looser than others, so that may be my problem. It's not that they don't work, they just don't give me a rush like the CB folders do. LOL

I think you're right -- the Ellison plates are *meant* to be subtle. Unfortunately for those of us hooked on the CB folders, the plates just don't measure up.
I guess I'm glad I started out with the Ellison textured plates but darn you enablers... Now I HAVE to buy the CB embossing folders to give them a try! Has any one used the Fiskars embossing plates in the BS?

I have all the Ellison texture plates as well as 2 sets of the Fiskars. The Fiskars work the same as Ellison's but for some reason I am partial to the Ellison plates. I like the texture plates but I LOVE the CB embossing folders. I will end up with 15 of the 18 folders that CB makes when I get my order from Busy Bee.
I did use the rubber mat. And you guys are right, the texture plates aren't designed to be as deep as the CB plates. But if you have caught the bug as I have, at least you have my experience (and others) to know what you are really getting. The plates are nice patterns and are subtle. The CB folders are deep embossing.
I just think Ellison missed the boat as I think the plates are too subtle. Sometimes you need the right light to even notice them.

I got some Fiskars plates to use in my Big Shot and I wasn't real impressed. (No pun intended ) They are even more subtle than the Ellison plates. It's really hard to see the design. I don't have any embossing folders yet, but I love all the samples I've seen here.

So very blessed and so very thankful.
God is good.
I think with the texturizing plates (especially Fiskars) it helps if you lightly mist the paper with water. Then let it dry before using. I also shimmed the fiskars with another piece of cardstock or two. Becareful not to strain your machine.
I have a Big Kick and have used Fiskars and Ellison texture plates - but like others have mentioned - I get a better impression when I spritz and add a card shim layer.
I got my first CB embossing folder yesterday and wow - what a great deep impression without the need for spritzing or a shim, it was fab!
I think it's because you sandwich your CS between the 2 sides of a CB folder and you just can't get the same depth of embossing/texture with the one-sided texture plates like Fiskars and Ellison/Sizzix.
I like the impression I have gotten with my texture plates. They are not meant to be a deep as the CB folders. To achieve a good impression I need to mist and add an extra shim. Lesa Rapp showed pictures of her results on her blog.
I was really impressed! (pun intended!) go check out her results and she what you think!
Oh my! I just looked at the Cuttlebug embossing folders and have to say that I need them all! You all are enablers!!! ;)
I have a few questions.
1. Will they work in my Big Shot (I'm assuming they will)?
2. Do I have to use the Big Shot Impressions Kit or do I use it like the smaller embossing folders that came with my Big Shot starter kit?
3. Will I get the same great impression I got with the small embossing folder that came with my Big Shot? They look the same, just one is bigger.
Thank you in advance. I really appreciate you help.
Michelle, they are just like the Big Shot embossing folders and you don't need anything extra. Just run them throught with both cutting pads. You'll be just fine. They are larger than the Big Shot folders but work the same.
