Just want to make sure I understand. You're asking either have 12 colors only, but full packs of those colors or 2 packs of EACH color family (8 packs total).
I say go for the color families. Colors I never thought I would like I love once I use them. Once I thought would be my favs I don't use so much. Chance to try out different color combos. I never looked twice at Always Artichoke then I used it with Mellow Moss. It's my favorite color now.
Go assorted then you can fill in what you use later. Have fun!

Yep. That's it.
But- at one point or another I have had an assorted pack of each family, so I have seen them all... if that makes sense. So 6 sheets of each color- or full packs of 12 colors?
If you have at least one sheet of each color (except for the ones you use all the time), then get the full packages of the colors that you don't have any more of (i.e. the ones you use/want to use the most). However, over time you may find that for, say, rich regals, you never want to have any full packs (just don't use most of those colors that often), so you should just keep buying assorted sets for that color family.
I say go with the variety, but that's just me. Of course, if there are certain colors that you know you need alot of, or you know someone who might want to split some packs (hint, hint) then get the whole packs. I know I am not much help. I almost always just get the variety - it makes me try different color combos and keeps me from getting into a color rut, if you know what I mean.

Before january we should get together and determine some package splitting. I really want to stock up on paper- and I know Linda will sell split packages, I just don't want to stick her with 24 half packages- you know.
I still say assorted. I like options  It bugs me when I want to make a card and I'm out of that color of anything!
Do you have colors you just love love love? Can you split it up get a couple of full packs of those and assorted on the color families you don't love? The only Rich Regal I've ever bought a full pack of is Night of Navy (and now Always Artichoke). Usually I just get an assorted pack since I don't really love that color family.
I'd would do the individual colors, the ones I use more often.. I think, of course having the assorted mix would force me to use colors outside my comfort zone!
I would do both. If there are colors you just adore get a pack or two of them and get the variety packs of color families! I do that all the time. there are just colors I can NOT be without, but have to have them ALL on hand. KWIM??
Frankly for myself, there are colors in the assorted packs I do not care for and would not use. Therefore, I would buy the packs of the colors I love and know I would use.
Of course, I do have one unopened assorted package from each color family just for the sake of *having it* I guess?

I buy assorted, and then occasionally get full packs of the colors I use most often, or a color(s) I need for a big batch of cards (like at Chirstmas, etc.). It has always worked for me!

I don't know which I'd do, but I wish there were larger variety packs at a more competitive price.
If you look at the quality and the amount you get get it's actually a very competitive price. As I said Bazzill is $.60 per sheet. Same is true with the ribbon. I do sometimes get printed ribbon or ribbon with wire someplace else but otherwise, SU is the way to go with that IMO.

SU paper is definetly cheap for good quality paper. But you can get Bazzill cheaper than 60 cents a cheap. TAC sells 25 packs with 5 sheets of each color in a monochromatic scheme for $7.95 which comes out to 32 cents.
There are just different uses for each CS, so a stampers got to have them all
As for ribbon- nope, you cannot beat the price of SU grosgrain, but the designer ribbons are about the same price you find everywhere else.
When I first started stamping, I purchased various packs, that way you get a little off all the colors, and then from there I would order full packs. I don't like soft subtles colors except Certainly Celery & Lavendar Lace, so I puchased a combo pack of that family, and a seperate pack of CC & LL. Same with the full pads, I only have CC & LL in the large size, but I have all the spots for that family.
If I weren't a TAC demo I would buy most of my cardstock from SU. It's really nice stuff at a great price. I buy Bazzill and Matchmakers now because that's what I sell. The texture is fun.
If you are buying SU cardstock solely for your own use (not classes or events) I would go with the variety packs. And if you don't already have one, get an SU color wheel. Those colors that don't stand out to you might grow on you if used in creative new combinations.

I'd go with the colour families. I'd hate to order a whole pack of one colour, and then find that I really don't like to work with it. If I like one of the colours in the combo pack, I could always reorder that one.

If you find that you use & like majority of colors in a color family, go for assorted. For e.g, I'd use almost all colors from Bold & earth, so when I buy assorted in these 2 color families, they are all being used plus I don't have to spend a fortune getting 24 color packs at once.
now, with Subtle, I use 2-3 colors & when I exhaust these 3 colors from the assorted pack, I'll stock up on full sheets. And on rare occassions when I need those never-used-colors, i'd still have the sheets from the assorted packs.
I started out by getting the assorted packs, because invariably I'd want to use the one color I hadn't ordered yet, KWIM? After that I gradually got full packs of everything, adding a few colors to each order I placed.

I agree! The variety lets you try out what you do and don't like, and you can experiment with different arrangements and such.Personally, I think some colors look funny with certain layouts/card sketches, while others are perfect. Then, when you find a couple you truly loooove, get a few packs of those colors.
I try to get at least one pack of cardstock with every order I place. ANd when in doubt, I get some Naturals Ivory - you can turn it into anything!!
