Who cuts ALL their 12 x 12 dsp down to card fronts or 6 x 6?
Hi ladies
I have so much 12 x 12 dsp and I mainly just make cards. I am trying to use more dsp instead of just HOARDING IT. I see so many pretty patterns that I want to keep buying more but I need to start using more too!
So do any of you cut all your dsp down to 6 x 6 or card fronts to have it more handy to use?
I was thinking if it was already cut down I would use it more and have it more readily accessible.
If you do cut it down, do you find you ever need a larger size or do you regret cutting it down?
Personally, I wouldn't cut my print paper down to any specific size before I need it. You never know when you might need a size larger than 6x6. I see no point to cutting it down before needed.
I don't precut mine. However, I am like you and I need to start using my DP more often rather than saving it. Why not start with one or two sheets and see how that goes? Rather than cut everything all at once, start slowly. Happy Stampin'!
Here is what I have done with my old scrapbooking stash. If I have 2 or more sheets of the same design. I save one 12 x12 ( I might want to make an envelope) and cut the other two down to 6x6. I keep the sheets in little crates that cost $1 at Walmart. Since I have it out in plain sight, I have been using it a lot more lately! I sort it according to main color in the print. Good luck using up some of your stash!
Thanks Ladies for the advice.. I mainly make std cards but I am trying to get out of the norm and make some square cards too.

This is exactly what I was thinking!! I didnt think about making envelopes I was planning on storing the dsp right on my desk in one of those $1 thingys too! Hopefully I will use more since its right within reach and its not like cutting into a new sheet. That first cut always hurts cutting into gorgeous dsp. Thanks CathyRose
Oh my gosh, I can relate! I have several 12x12 paper stacks and I've hardly used any of it. I also thought about cutting some down into 6x6 as there are several sheets of each pattern but of course I haven't yet ! But another idea I think that may work is to make several cards with the paper as the background and put different sentiments on the fronts. Below is a lovely card I saved in my favs that is a good example. I think I could easily use up a good amount of paper by making similar cards and just changing the sentiment.
If you use your 12 x 12 paper to make cards mainly, I would cut it into 4 x 5 1/4" pieces. You would get 6 card fronts per sheet with only a 1 1/2 x 12" strip of leftover. (assuming you would layer the 4 x 5 1/4 piece onto a standard 4 1/4 x 5 1/2" card.) Cutting it into 6x6 only gets you 4 card fronts with tons of little pieces left over.
I've been thinking of this very thing lately. I think I've decided to cut my paper to 4x6 unless it has a definite directional pattern. Like stripes, etc. Then I will cut it 6x6.
I mostly do cards now but I started with scrapbooks. So I figure if I buy some paper for a certain layout or project, then I won't cut that down. But the rest? I really think I'd use more of my paper if I had it out where I could see it.
Now to find the time to do it... LOL!
Good luck with your decision!
I have a stack buying addiction. I haven't pre-cut any yet - not a bad idea for those papers that I know will be cards (I also scrapbook) - but I do find myself buying more smaller stacks. I like the smaller prints that they scale down - more "card-sized" I guess.
I don't cut anything until I use it. Sometimes I make a 5x7 card, or a card that fits a #10 business envelope (that's about 4x9). I don't want to take away any of my options when it comes to paper. :p
the only thing that i see wrong with the idea is if there is a certain pattern that you may want to use a certain way down the line but now it's cut. i used several pages from a stack for christmas cards this year and was able to use it as a background as well as get some really fun focal points out of the same sheet. if i had already cut the sheets down i may not have been able to use it that way.
I don't cut mine till I need it.
And like a previous poster, I quite often use it when I need a custom-sized envelope.
Some 3D projects require unusual sizes, and some fancy folds, too. It's easier to store it as 12x12 till I know what I am doing with it.
I wouldn't advise cutting your paper. I originally cut my cardstock in half as soon as I got it, then I would find something to make and I had NO whole sheets. It is easy to cut it as you need it and then you always have any size you need.
I never cut down my dp until I need it. I have started cutting a one inch strip off one end of my 12x12 cs and then cutting it into 4 inch strips for cards. This way I can get 3 cards from 1 sheet and you don't even notice the diffenence in size.
I mostly do cardmaking too, and now I only buy the 8x8 dp pads or smaller cuz I prefer the smaller design scale for my cards. A lot of the prints on 12x12 dp are way too large for cards!
I don't cut my 12x12 DP before using it either. I used to do 12x12 scrapbook pages, but now I prefer 8x8, 6x6 or smaller mini albums and cards, so I like to keep my options open for all my paper. If I only made cards, I could see the possible benefit of pre-cutting it though.
I say go for it if it really works for you. :-D

I dont precut...I use what I feel like doing at any given time...but I do cut mine down..when I am doing a huge amount of cards for the troops I sometimes but my 12 x 12 into 3 4" strips and then cut that 4" strip down into 3" pieces..this way I can make 12 cards from one 12 x 12 piece of colored/printed cardstock on a plain color back ground. Does that make sense? I make my pretty cardstocks go as far as possible so I can get more cards to those who serve our country. Blessings.
I have the Dream kuts by zutte,r and cut alot of my 12" small patterned paper into 6 6X4, that size works for the front of cards, I just need to trim it a little.
I've cut most of my retired SU dsp paper into 6x6 and have them separated in a couple of the $1 crates from the Dollar Tree. Now if I could just find someone who has some Walk In The Park - I loved that paper.
I've also been in several paper swaps & they are sorted by color. I hate cutting a 12x12 for just a card front :-)
I decided to cut my papers down to 8 1/2" x 12" so that I could put them in a standard filing cabinet (they fit in legal-size folders this way). I usually have multiples of each design (from stacks, etc.), so I turn a couple one way and the others the other way so any directional pattern gets used both ways. I cut a 3" x 3" square of each pattern from the resulting strips - labeled on the back - and have them organized by color/style on book rings so I can see what I have. They are organized in the folders in the same order as the book rings, so it is easy to find what I want, and it's much easier to flip through bits on a book ring than wade through all the folders, for sure! I also reconfigured page protectors and attached them to the inside of the folders to hold the strips and scraps of the papers in that folder so they're all together. I've attached a few thumbnails for those who want/need a visual...
I forgot to say that I leave my cardstock in 12" x 12" sheets in case I want to make something that requires that. Also, any dp that has a pattern that takes the whole sheet (like a frame, for instance) or that I'm not sure how I'll use the piece, I leave that intact - there are VERY few of those, however...
Thanks Ladies for all your input.. I have decided to cut some down to have on hand for quick cards while leaving a small amount in case I need it for a larger project. I dont scrapbook so I know I will never use all this 12 x 12 paper..
If you have so much DSP that sounds like a good idea to cut some and leave some. I think I may do that also especially with DSP that I have a tendency not to use. Out of sight out of mind.

Exactly! Most of the dsp I have is SU and you get 2 sheets of each.. so I will cut one and save one
