Didn't a new big catalog come out in January 2008? Does anyone know the timeline for 2009? I heard that Sale-a-bration will be out Feb 1 - March 31 and I like to coordinate my buying where I get free stuff.
Ever since SU went to 2 big cattys a year I have been confused on the timing.
Don't forget that there's a "dormant" list...sets that were in a previous catalog, not shown in the current catalog, but are still available. So, basically, each set in the F/W catalog will either be in the S/S catalog, on the dormant list, or retired. Until a set officially retires, you can still get it through your demo.
I wish we had a little more time with the F/W catty. I always feel "rushed", like I have to hurry and buy what I want before it ends.
I think that is a strategic selling point for them. I makes you feel like OMG if I don't get it now I wont be able to get it. Smart on their part, not so good for my piggybank though.
I agree with momis momma. One catalog a year is fine for me. I hate feeling pressured to buy before a new catalog and the f/w one has terrible timing - vacation, back to school, (with all the requisite dental, eye, and physical exams), then the holidays. And I usually like the f/w catalog better than the s/w one. JMHO
i prefer just one catalog per year. no flames please! it's just my preference
i know they want to keep things fresh but... I NEED MORE TIME with a catalog to get all i need/want
I totally agree with you. I also need SU to lower minimum demo sales requirements. :( I've been with SU for quite a few years, and the economy is not looking so good.....

No need to rush on the stamp sets that are brand-new to this catalog! Shelli herself said that those are guaranteed to stick around for a minimum of two catalog cycles. Let me tell you, that sure made life easier for demos who needed to plan ahead and get started on Convention swaps before the retiring list came out!
I love the semi-annual catalog releases -- even though I don't have tons of $$ to spend at once and need to spread out my purchases, starting around the 8-month mark I'd find myself CRAVING fresh, new stuff!

Thank you to everyone that posted. It does seem odd that it's only 5 months on the Fall Winter catalog. But I do like having Sell A Bration when a new catty comes out. That way I can get more free stuff. I usually save up basic supplies for buying during Sell A Bration.
Perfect timing of a new catalog. My birthday is in January so I can totally treat myself to a nice big order and justify it by saying that it may be the last chance I get at these sets. Shh, even if it's not, let's just let my mind think it is...helps with the justifying...

I think there's been a little adjusting on the timing to get it to a schedule that works for them. Could be why it's been hard to keep it straight, lol!

This is me too. I sell for TAC that went to two a yr as well. It is hard to keep up on buying/selling the catalogs. I have a small customer base and seem to wind up with too many left overs from 2 boxs but 1 box never covers it. Plus the cost to customers buying 2 a year.

You don't need to explain...I think every one of us likes to let her mind think that way!
I'd prefer just one catalog and more minis per year. I was turned off when they went to two. It just seems like money-grubbing to me, and it must be a nightmare for most demonstrators. The dormant list doesn't cut it, because it's out of sight, out of mind.
I find myself ordering less and less. This time I just got the In Colors in paper, ink, and refills and not much more.

I agree. I haven't purchased anything from this catalog because I know another cool book will be out soon!

this is just my opinion. i would love to see more comission since we pay so much for shipping we really dont make much money. I do like the one catalog thing then we dont have to buy so many books i love su been s demo for 5 years
I wish we had a little more time with the F/W catty. I always feel "rushed", like I have to hurry and buy what I want before it ends.
I agree completely. Not to mention having 2 catalogs is confusing!
I did see on another thread (not sure if it's true) that SU is going back to the 1 catalog per year. The person said she heard this from someone high up with SU, I believe. We will have to wait a see.
To be honest I have to wonder how SU is doing with all of the economy troubles? From both a customer, and a Demo stand point most people just don't have the money for the extras in life right now. So maybe we will benefit with lots of good promos from SU! Hopeful thinking on my part!
As for SU's decision to go to the 2 catalogs per year in the first place, it never made sense to me. At least not from a business stand point, the turn around time alone should have jumped out at them that it would not work!
Here's to hopeing for some great sales, and 1 catalog per year!
I think two catalogs are a bit greedy. I would rather have one grand one than 2 smaller. Really frustrating as a new stamper. I hope someone at the home office reads these posts.

Sorry, I love having two too! (to.. just throwing that one in for free)
Anyway...
It's exciting and it makes me rethink sets I may not have looked at before. I think all the internet companies that can do a monthly release with little overhead kinda push them to keep everything fresher than they did in the past. A year was just getting to be too long, in retail terms. Imagine your local department store keeping up the same displays for a year. *yawn
At least they are promising to keep any new set for more than one catalog season, that helps you plan accordingly if you can't get what you would like to have right away.
It doesn't really matter to me; I am happy whether they do one catalogue a year or two. I definitely see the advantages and disadvantages of both ways. I admit I'm finding that the one thing I'd hoped for with having 2 catalogues per year is not happening - they aren't giving me more and better stamps for the spring/summer holidays/events like Mother's Day, Father's Day, grad and Easter. So that's annoying, and it causes me to think they may as well go back to doing 1 a year, since I'm not gettting what I want anyway.
I do have a question... does a new catalogue in Jan mean new hostess sets? If that is the case, that part I like, because I already have all the hostess sets from this catalogue that I really want.
I thought that a new catty in January was a bad business decision in that they are not tapping into the Christmas buying season for gift giving. Also people are still paying off their holiday bills in January. But I do love two cattys a year with fresh stuff and new hostess sets.
I much preferred one catty a year and more mini-catalogs.
I'm a hobby demo and I stopped buying boxes of cattys because I could never unload a whole box in 6 months - most people don't want to buy one at that price when it is only good for 6 months or less.

I'm good with two catalogs per year. It keeps the merchandise fresh and helps SU compete with other stamp companies that have monthly releases and online or local scrapbook stores that refresh their product frequently. I hardly shop at Micheal's or Joann's anymore--even with a 40% off coupon because their merchandise hardly changes and I have what I need already.
I have been at this a while, so I can get most, if not all, of my A items in six months. And my B items get replaced with new A items with the next catalog!
As a mostly hobby demo, it is more work to keep up with the new products and promotions, but that's OK. With a full time job and four kids, I don't sweat it if I miss something with SU.
As for boxes of catalogs, I offer them at the beginning of the catalog to my customers for $5. I have just one catalog left, plus my own copy. When I had a stamp class on Friday, there were just two catalogs left to browse. My friends did not mind sharing, and I am not stuck with business supplies I do not need. Five dollars seems reasonable, when you consider a copy of CARDS magazine is $20, and you get way more samples.
One catty per year please. The minis more than satisfied my cravings for new stamps and new ideas. I feel rushed to buy with the two catty format, if I am rushed I tend not to buy.
1. Have the on-line catty up and running when the hard copy comes out. It was painful to download it vs being able to just view it. It turned me off. Poor planning.
2. Work out the release timing better than they did this year. I know it had to do with coordinating with Convention for attending demos to get it first, but for customers who don't attend the convention--we expected it and didn't get it. It felt like a broken promise.
3. I still don't know when the Fall/Winter one will come out next year and am thankful for SCS where I can keep informed and plan purchases accordingly.
4. All that paper used to print the large catty two times a year isn't earth-friendly. Going green is here to stay.
5. I miss the minis. They felt like little presents throughout the year!
6. It would be cool if they included some of the dormant items in the minis. Like Happy Heart wrote: out of sight, out of mind.

I think 2 a year is OK but they didn't time the Halloween stamps very well - as I understand it, the new ones didn't become available until October 1. That's too late for most of us.

Amen to that! I loved the fall DP in the holiday mini but waiting until Oct. 1 is TOO late for me! My club didn't meet until Oct. 11...fall would be over before I got my order. OK...not entirely over, but by then I'm totally in gear for Christmas.

There ya go. My 2 cents worth lol.
I agree on all points. I really miss the mini catalogs and my demo can't get them like she used to as the $ amount of monthly sales has changed or something and I like my own mini! The timing in 2008 seemed out of whack or something.
I really miss the minis too ... I also liked the one catalogue per year format better ... this just seems too rushed and the next one is out. I understand it from a business perspective, but from the customer perspective (at least mine), one catalogue was perfect, with more minis!
I agree. I haven't purchased anything from this catalog because I know another cool book will be out soon!

That's so true - I feel the same way. I hadn't bought SU for a couple years, but recently got a new catalog and since it's only good a few months, I want to be more selective because maybe there is something I will like better next time...
I used to love the mini catalogs and would buy more from them because they were more limited.

I agree totally. I think the only one that makes more money with the two catalogs a year is SU since we have to all buy cases of catalogs twice a year opposed to the one time purchase. I think it was better and more cost effective along with being more earth friendly to put out more minis and have only one big catalog a year. Personally it turned me off to SU and just showed their greed when they started the two a year and Ive noticed that Ive ordered a lot less from them since. When they put out the multiple minis it was something to not only to stir the waters to generate new sales but also more times than not Ive purchased every stamp in it Just my two cents worth.
