How did you get so smart, Cat Woman? I think I've left that magnetic ruler stuck in the same place since I got the trimmer. It never occurred to me to use it that way. Brilliant, thank you.
Okay, bugga, we both already know you're smarter, wiser, cuter and _____er than me. So, because of that, and ONLY that, I decided to give the MM another try. And because of that, and ONLY that, I found out . . . that I was doing it wrong! I was butting the bottom of the paper against the bottom guide, but shifting it to the left, rather than to the right. There really is no left end of the bottom guide because that's where the blade goes. So, when I butt the paper against the bottom, but shift it to the right, it matches up perfecty.
Plus, I tried Cat Woman's trick for the more precise cuts, and it works perfectly as well.
I'm reminded of a quote about great minds, or something like that.

Reva, thank you for the kind words above. You made me smile on a day when I needed to.
I'm so happy you perservered with the trimmer. And I think we should agree that Cat Woman is smarter, wiser, cuter and _____er than both of us!
To paraphrase Hillary C., maybe "It takes a village to raise a stamper."

I have read each post here....I have right now three different trimmers. Nice looking of course but each has their cutting problem. Not sure where I will go now. I am leaning towards Tonic or Genesis.
blessings.
Hi - I have a Making Memories paper trimmer. It's sturdy and substantial. The downfall is that you have to line up the top and bottom measurements for the paper to cut straight but that's easy to fix. The other problem with it that it is cumbersome to take to crops and I also own a Fiskars because it's more portable.
And I now have something else to contribute - the Purple Cow Deluxe 2 in 1 trimmer (guilatine and rotary) is for sale at my local Costco for about $26. Shall I go for it?!?!?!?!?
I have a fiskars cutter with the wire guide and I'm not that thrilled with it. Sometimes I do not get a straight cut and I have to replace my blades quite often.
I have a very old Fiskars and buy a new blade (orange) once in a while. It is portable and accurate. I went to a class once, I was the only person without one of those great big cutters! I could see no difference in their cuts? And they looked expensive...
I have done zillions of cards and 12 x 12 scrapbooking for 2 kids with no problem....

Am I missing something?8-)
I don't think you're missing a thing. You've probably got it all - a good eye for lining things up, patience to place your paper in the right place, and maintaining and taking good care of your tools so they last a long time.
Within reason, I think all the supplies we find and use in our crafting are decent quality - sometimes the difference is in how we put them to use. Just because you purchase $$$ of Copic markers, doesn't mean your coloring will be an artistic masterpiece, lol.
As an example, OT but kind of on point, take a look at what this talented artist is able to create using only Crayola crayons:
