Depends on whether you want alcohol based markers or waterbased markers. For alcohol based I would start out with a set of Bic Markits or Sharpies. They're inexpensive and you can see if you like the way they colour. Then as you get better you add to your collection with Copics or Prismacolor markers. I don't really use waterbase markers so I can't give you any info on those. I haven't had much luck blending with them unless I was colouring on watercolour paper. There are people who swear by Tombow and SU markers. You could pick up a couple Tombow at a LSS to see if you like them. Which ever way you go, watch out because they are just about as adictive as buying stamps.
thank you....my sister is bring out some Tombows to try...and then I have got to thinking..hmmmmm...maybe the Prismapencils with gamasol or baby oil...
what's a girl to do????
I use the Prisma Pencils with the baby oil........and LOVE them. My only regret is that when I ordered them from Blick's I got the 74 or 75 pencil set......WISH I had gotten them all.
I love my SU! markers. I have some Tombows, but don't use them very often. Colour wise I'd stick with the Earth Elements or Rich Regals for the first set.
I have a ton of waterbased Tombow markers and love them. They come in many different colors. Penwa.com has a sale for $1.90 each now. I have 2 sets of SU markers. They are nice if you use want to match their cs.

Do both! I use pencil crayons and oms more than I use markers (just because I only have the Bics and Sharpies right now). I will be trying copics but want to use some of my stash before I start buying again (or rather stop buying so I start using). Oh well, you know what I mean. :-D
I bought the whole set of SU markers during Sale-A-Bration a couple of years ago so I could get lots of free goodies. I love them and have never had to replace one. They match all my SU stuff, and I get good results.
I also have Copic markers but I find that I don't use them as much now that the "new" has worn off, but I probably would if I had more time to stamp and color. I did like the results I got with them, and bought them with coupons or during sales so they were not quite as expensive. I especially like them for areas of really tiny, fine detail in an intricate image like the Lockhart ones.
My SU markers just sit now. I *love* the Copic. Actually, my SU markers sat before I got the Copics too, I just did not like the results I got coloring with them. I have much, much better success with blending, shading, etc. with the Copic and now actually like the images I color! They were an investment, but any good quality tool is, plus they are refillable, the tips can be replaced and you can even airbrush with them. Also, you can use them to color just about an embellishment to coordinate with your project, buttons, fabric, metal, plastic, ribbons!!!

I think alcohol based markers and waterbased markers each give a different look...it depends what you're going for. Waterbased will give a more watercolored look (when used with a blender pen or aquapainter) and the alcohol markers (or colored pencils and OMS) are more vibrant, IMO.
I use my SU markers because I like the softer look, plus as momis mama said, they match my cardstock and accessories (and I use them to dye my white ribbon if I don't have a certain color). I also use them to color right on my stamps.
