Default What machine do you like for embossing?

Hello,

I have many embossing folders by provo craft, quickutz and now sizzix. As for machines I have a Revolution, Epic 6 and Big Shot. I love these machines for die cutting but I don't feel they give a great impression when embossing. A gal at my LSS recommended the Sizzix Boutique and said it was great at embossing. It compared to the Cuttlebug. I am interested mainly in embossing but not sure which one to get.

Sizzix Boutique $21.00 with a coupon
Cuttlebug $40 with a coupon

What do you think? Do you have any of these machines and how do you emboss?

Thanks so much,
Candie

IME, the cuttlebug and the Big Shot are almost identical. I've never used the other. Are you sure you're using the right part of your platform for embossing? I use mine all the time for embossing and have no problems.

Yeah I agree, I have had all 4...the Revolution, Cuttlebug, Bigshot and the Epic...I sold the Cuttlebug because it was ugly and tippy and also passed the Revolution on when I got the Epic. I find that you can vary your dry-embossing results more with a cardstock shim than you can by switching machines. I keep two manual machines because I love them all and like having the plates set up to have one cut and one emboss during projects.

Anyway, the embossing results are really only alterable by the amount of pressure you put them through...so add cardstock if it's not crisp enough and you will be quite happy with the machines you have I think.

Also, the QK embossing folders leave a much more subtle impression...no matter what you do with those, they only get so deep, just because that's how they are manufactured. I love them, but they are definitely a lighter look.

I am dying for my new Tim Holtz folders to arrive to see how those look!!

Have you shimmed your machines properly? I have a Big Shot and have used it many times to emboss. I've found though, that sometimes I need to shim with extra card stock under the plate in order to get a good heavy impression.

BTW, I've also used a Cuttlebug for embossing. The same shimming comment applies.

I rarely have to shim for either machine with embossing folders. Now, with embossing plates, that's another story as they tend to not give good deep impressions on any machine unless you mist the paper with water or alcohol first.

There's also a very cool spray called Paper Glide that helps to create a deeper impression when dry embossing with a folder or texture plate. Try your LSS or Google; it works great!

Like was suggested, I'd try shimming before buying a new machine. It sounds like there isn't enough pressure to give you a deep emboss. Just keep some cheap paper, and start adding one or two shims at a time and running them through. You want the sandwich tight but not too tight to push through. Don't force it through. The tighter the sandwich the more pressure will be put on the paper, the deeper it will emboss. You aren't going to get a deeper impression with a Cuttlebug than you would with the Big Kick/Shot.

You can spray rubbing alcohol very lightly with a spray bottle onto the card and that helps with a deeper impression, and l had the same problems and have done the shims if you go onto utube there are lot's of videos to show you how to get a good results and with the texture plates as well.

I use my cuttlebug. and run the embossing plates through two times for a deeper image.

It's going to depend on the type of paper you use with your embossing folders.
