I have mostly sketches but I do have a few ciaos. The only things I don't like about ciaos are they roll off my table, which isn't too big a deal, but I really dislike the numbers and color not being on the cap.
I have a combination of both the sketch and ciao's and what I am doing is as the ciao's dry up, instead of refilling them I order the sketch markers. I bought the ciao's because of the price and I figure now that I have all the Copic's I can afford to replace the ciao's as I need to. I don't have any regret of getting my Copic's this way as I was able to afford all of them sooner.
I actually like the Ciao slightly better than the Sketch! I am an extremely untidy crafter so putting something as small as a marker cap down on my table is dangerous - I can spend the rest of the afternoon looking for it! With the Ciao, you can park the cap on the other end of the marker while you use it whereas the Sketch doesn't let you do that!
The Ciao holds slightly less ink but I figure if you're going to buy refills then it doesn't really make a difference if you refill after using the marker 75 times rather than 95 times, right?
I have both the sketch and ciao's. What I did was print out a color chart of the Ciao. Then I took my 1/4" circle punch and punched out the marker number and glued that to the end caps of the Ciao markers. I usually use my color chart to pick out my marker because the caps on the markers aren't a good indication of the actual color.
There is about a teardrop less ink in the ciaos. They are less money...refillable...the caps fit nicely together...and the tips are the same on all the copics. If you are using the air compressor you just have to have an adaptor to use the ciao...rather inexpensive for the adapter. You get more bang for your buck with the ciao marker. I wish they came in all the colors.
I bought a set of Ciaos first and have since purchased the other 2 styles and I dislike using the Ciaos the most. I don't like that the number is not on the top (i've punched out numbers for the tops but they rub off..) and I don't like how they feel in my hand (too small) and I've had some run out of ink WAY before the others... SO.. I am like the others that mentioned replaced dead Ciaos with either Sketch or Original markers..

I actually like Caios better because I like the round barrels more than the square of the Sketch. And it's cheaper so I can get more! hehe. It's all in preferences. I just write the numbers on the cap of my Caios and I'm fine with that.
I am happy I bought the Ciaos because I saved money. I am filling in with the Sketch. You won't regret it if you purchase the Ciaos and fill in with sketches. Actually, when I am stamping it's easier to find the colors because I know which are Sketch and which are Ciaos.

I love my Ciaos! I like the way they feel in my hand, and the fact that they are less money. I'm buying a few Sketch to fill in color families, but I'm pretty happy with the Ciaos 144 colors.

I love my ciaos! I don't regret buying them and then filling in (ahem - collecting) the rest of the colours in sketches (well not all colours, but many).
I started with Ciao's. And then I bought a couple of Sketch, then a few more, then a few more. The main important thing for me is the number on the end of the cap. And I have cut out the number on labels and labeled the end of the Ciao's, but it is harder to read because there is not as much room.
So, I have run dry a few of the ones I started with - G21, R24, E31... I bought Sketches of those as I run out, and then since I ran out of Ciao, I also had to buy the refills, because obviously I use those a LOT!
Only think I wish is that the caps would fin on the end of the other cap. But that is a MINOR issue for me... the numbers imprinted are much more important to me!
I have the Ciaos and love them I store them in chart order and managed to put numbers on most of them. I tend to grab a grouping and work with that grouping in my hand so that my ink stays wet for blending and I love that I don't lose the marker end.
And I refill my Ciaos too.
I love them and also love the variety (I bought two 72 packs) I have available without over investing in colors I don't use as often and yet I can have the kid in a candy shop feel when I look at all the pretty colors to decide what to use!
I have mostly Ciaos and filling in with sketches. Financially it makes more sense, now if you have some money to burn... well then you can save yourself some time by not having to pull out the Ciaos to get the numbers, sketches are more convenient that way. I don't find it that big a deal to do that though when I figure out the money I am saving, thus the more markers I can afford to buy in the long run!! They all color the same, and that is all that matters to me.
I purchased Ciaos first because the LSS sold Ciaos and no Sketches. I do wish I knew about the Sketches though because of the # that is on the cap. However, not having the # on the cap is only a minor inconvenience -- it's not like I use the Copics all the time since I use a lot of other coloring tools.
I like both Ciaos and Sketch markers. I have been collecting both. Like most others stated the drawback to the Ciaos is that the color name and number is not on the cap. Its all about your comfort zone though, that may not matter to you.
Another difference is, you can't use the Ciaos in the airbrush system (as far as I know- but there may be a tutuorial on how to accomplish it regardless)
There is a price difference too, the Ciaos are much cheaper. I do not notice any difference in the way they color though, the brushes on both the ends are similar to the Sketch markers.

Hope this helps!! :-)
You CAN use Ciaos with the airbrush system you just need to pad the marker holder up to fit - I believe some ladies used dimensionals. ;)
For those of you getting the Sketch version when your Ciao runs out... remember that the marker is still good (with a refill) so don't throw it out... recoup some of your investment and sell them.

Yep - absolutely! Just pop a dimensional (or two) in the air grip and the Ciaos work just fine in there.
I'm intrigued that so many people value the number and colour name on the marker cap! There's no way I stand a chance of remembering the values and even names of all the colours I own (which is nowhere near all the colours available) so it makes no odds to me whether they're on the cap or not! I use the cap colour as a rough guide and dot the marker on the page before using it in anger, just to make sure it really is what I want.
I love the sketches because of the cap info as well ~ I have a chart made with all my colors & have all my makers organized standing up ~ so when I pick out the colors I want off my chart ~ I just find it ~ easy-peasy. Plus, I like how the sketch markers feel in my hand ~ the ciaos feel too small to me...
I am very happy with the Ciao's for colors I don't tend to use often. I don't like the warmer colors so I don't use them as much therefore don't need as much ink. It is a way to save a few pennies and still build your collection with all the colors you want. I also like the shape of the ciao's. As a beginner I am used to holding a round marker and find it easier to control. Now that I have been practicing for a few months the sketch's don't feel so strange to me anymore, but I still like the ciaos. I just colored a little patch and wrote the color # over it and punched it out and glued it onto the cap so I can identify them. Works great for me. I suggest that you opt for the Sketch for flesh tones and your favorite colors as you will use much more ink.
Hi, I have both sketch and ciao and I like them both. For the money I saved I'd buy the ciao's again. Only thing I should have got in a sketch was the colorless Blender. I will probably get a sketch in that one and give my daughter the ciao. Over all I am happy with both and I personally dont mind the round body of the ciao. I will continue to order ciao,& fill in with sketch markers of the colors that the ciao's dont come in.
I love my Ciaos and started out with them to save money since it is kind of expensive when you first start buying them. I have added some sketch markers for colors I needed. But, I prefer the Ciaos because I can store them in some plastic bullet cases that my husband gets from his boxes of bullets. The copics fit in there perfectly and stand upright.

Excellent point that is very much worth repeating!
I tried all three at my LSS - Ciao, Sketch and Original. Ciao was my least favorite. Aside from not having the name/number on the cap, they rolled around on the table and, most importantly, did not feel good in my hand. The Sketch and the Original felt more substantial and laid nicely in my hand - I didn't feel like I had to grip them as hard. It could just be me. I liked the feel of the Original best but wanted the color options of the Sketch, and that one didn't feel too bad in my hand, so I decided to go all Sketch.

All of my copics are sketch. I like how they stay put and dont roll around. They are comfortable to hold. Also, I use my hand colored chart to pick my colors. Having the numbers on the caps makes it easy to find what I want since I store them in order by color family and number. When I first bought copics, I knew I would want more colors than what the ciao offered. Having two different styles of markers would drive me nuts since I like everything to match. So I went with all sketch.
I love my Ciaos for the same reasons as everyone has listed. I used a fine black permanent marker to write the numbers on both caps. I love that the caps go on the end and how small they are because I have small hands. The price is right too. I'd never replace mine with sketch.
No matter which ones you buy, I recommend buying sets. I started with the 72 A set of ciaos and just ordered the 72B set. You will get colours you don't think you need but you will almost certainly use them if you learn to shade well. And if the caps are on right, they will never dry out. I also ordered 4 sketch in colours they don't make in ciaos
In case you buy a few at a time, did you know you can get clear plastic cases for only a few bucks? Also. The tips are identical for sketch and ciao. The shape and caps are different but the ink and tips are identical.
I highly recommend you a take the certification class if you can!! I loved mine. And check out www.ilikemarkers.co

I haven't read through everyone's opinions but I will tell you, yes I bought the Ciao's (because they were cheaper) and then bought the Sketch markers later on and I do regret it. I like the Sketch ones so much better and once you try one there is no going back!!!
I have both - and guess which one just rolled off the table last week! the Sketch!!! I wish I was making that up. Also when I color I always hold my multiples in my hand as I use them, then I jot down the colors and then I put them back in order in the cases (I have my cases Ciao 72A and 72B) organized together in color order.
