A nail file also works, depends on what look your going for~ sometimes I crumple the paper and run sand paper over the crinkles, ink it to look aged...straighten it out. Hth
And sometimes I mist the edges of the paper and then use the edge of scissors or a mat knife to rough up the edges. When you do this though, the paper will shrink a little when it dries.
And, you can mist it with water and crumple it all up very tightly, reopen it and flatten out with your hands to dry.
I have a question re: this technique. What kind of adhesive do you use. I love doing this technique, but can never find the right adhesive to make it stick and stay.
I thought about using scissors but with my track record, it was asking for trouble. So, instead, I used the edge of my tweezers. I have a really long pair of tweezers with a really pointy point. I used the edge. It is great because you get double the scrape since the tweezers have two edges.

If you want to distress the edge of the paper. You can use the end of the wood block of one of your stamps, the edge. It works great if you are working with card stock thickness of paper.
