Honestly, I use a clear resist crayon that comes with Easter egg decorating kits. It has just the right amount of stick. You can also buy wax resist crayons on Amazon and in many craft stores. In a pinch, I'll use a white crayon, but that sometimes leaves a little white fleck behind.
It's a little misleading to state that the Chinese pencil is "a plain white pencil". The ones used for picking up gems are wax pencils, they are not white coloring pencils. I use mine all the time for gem setting, have for years. I don't feel the need to pay a bunch of money for some tool when the wax pencil works perfectly fine for me. You can get 5 of them for $1.31 on Ebay. You will have to wait about a month for delivery from China.
Well for a long time I was using reverse tweezers but they can pop all over.
I got a marvy but I feel like I have to clean it often to keep the stickiness. Not hard. Just sayin'
I am sure I had a jewel picker but I can't find it-it had the sticky stuff you push forward. You cant refill those though.
I just got one of the white pencils 2 days ago in a bargain bin as I see a lot of people using those. I haven't tried it yet.
For what that's worth.

do you happen to have a link for those? I just went to eBay and typed in Chinese pencil and came up with either watercolor pencils $5 & up or vases nothing about 5 for $1.31 or even close. I even tried typing Chinese white pencil and Chinese wax pencil and Chinese gem picker pencils. Thanks in advance for any help.
I think that "misleading" is the wrong word to use. That implies that the error was intentional, and I don't believe it was. It was simply a mistake, which we all make.

The definition of misleading: giving the wrong idea or impression.
Nothing about intentional, nor did I indicate anything about intention. We all have our triggers and personal filters, through which we process. I simply stated that calling it a white pencil could lead to thinking a white coloring pencil was what was being discussed.
I use one with a wax tip on one end and a pokey tool on the other. Closest I found on Amazon (without a hard search) is this one but it has a tiny pick up on the pokey tool end. I prefer the pokey tool because I can use it to move my gems into the perfect place if I don’t get it perfect the first time.

The one I used in the video are white colored pencils....There is pigment and I did color with them as I had like a dozen. I guess the wax in the colored pencils I received was enough to hold embellishments.

I think I'm liking this idea because it looks like you don't have to sharpen. I for one never know where I have layed down my pencil sharpener lol. So thanks for the info. I just ordered one of these and it should be here today. Just in time for adding sequins to all the tags I've been making!
