Sizzix Bird w/ leaves & flower su mini

I just used my die and did a cute design, but I'm still wondering what the slit in the bird is for - I just sort of folded it up and gave some dimension to the bird - can anyone tell me it's real purpose? Thanks!

Is the slit for the wing? I have the small die set...but don't remember it. ;)

the small set has a wing, but the large sizzix one doesn't. Like I said I just sort of folded it up and gave some dimension. I love the bird and the flower, but just confused over this slit.
