I have this Nestie set and I see people are making cards with a slightly smaller one on top of the larger(not the next one smaller in the set) and am wondering how you are getting that cut? Are you free cutting it yourself down to 1/8 inch in or so, OR, do you have a smaller Nestie? I see it with some of the other Nestie labels too. I love the look, just wondering how you are accomplishing it?
TIA!

Can you link an example? When you layer the Labels 8 die cuts you will have at least a 1/4" margin. If I saw a picture I could tell you for sure.
It's definitely another one on top of the bottom layer. It could be with the Top Note too but that is one size of a cut so how do you get it smaller? The Nesties #8 do have the layers for cuts but the next smaller layer does not line up directly below the curves, does that make sense? How do I get a link to this so I can show what I mean?
It is definitely two layers of paper with the same cut, but one layer is 1/4 inch smaller. My Nesties #8 do not have the cuts to layer that close and perfectly around the curves. Its a smaller next size in the group of 5. Is there another Nesties #8 set that is like the large, small and petite of the other Nesties? I've also seen it with the Big Note and that is only one die in the set. Also, how do I "link" a sample to this thread?
Just copy the web address while you are looking at a gallery sample (jhighlight the address with your mouse and then press Ctrl-c on your keyboard for a shortcut) and then paste it into your post (Ctrl-v shortcut to paste).

No, the labels sets are single sets, there are no large/small options like with ovals, circles etc which is why Debbie (who is on the Spellbinder design team) was able to say with confidence there'd be at least a 1/4" margin with layered cuts.
Quickutz had a set of cookie cutter dies that looks very similar but more narrow. I don't believe that their cookie cutter dies are available currently.
It looked like this:

The way I cut mine is with a swivel coluzzle knife! I use the same Labels 8 die that I used to cut the image out with and lay it down on top of the mat paper and cut around the edge slowly with the swivel knife. It gives me between 1/16 to 1/8" matt. Hope this helps!
Hugs,Connie
I have just cut out the biggest Label 8 and next biggest Label 8 on the Cuttlebug and the only 1/4 in. part is the long side points. Otherwise, the end curves are fairly large and don't stay equal around them and the side points are bigger than 1/4 in.

Thanks! That would explain why the same cut twice but a little smaller.
Even the Quikutz shown above would not be equal if you use the outer two for a cut and mat.

Also, how would you do this look with the Big Note? It's only one die?
Sorry I can't help with the quickutz or the Big Note! I don't have the die cuts to actually look at to see how you would make a mat! I only have the nesties!
Hugs,Connie
That's the Top Note die, not Spellbinder so I'd guess it was hand cut round the perforated border.
I do the same as Connie sometimes if I want a mat for a die I don't have a "next one up" for - just use a craft blade round the outside of the die. It's one of the beauties of a flat die that's made of metal!
I cut out my lables 8 with my cuttlebug and then I tape it to the piece of cardstock that I want my outside layer to be. I then just free hand trim it with my scissors. You have to go slowly because it can be a little tricky

Great card, Kim!
The other thing Kim did here was to put it against a "busy" pattern in the background. Any minor imperfections in the hand trimming are pretty much going to disappear if you do that (not that I'm implying your trimming is imperfect Kim, I'm sure it's absolutely spot on :lol

Nice card! That is a great way to make the layer!
Here is another sample of what I was saying about the Labels 8. Here you just use the two different sizes of the 8's and this is what you get...not what I was looking for, for the look. LWE - Hope Perches in the Soul by uncbballfan at Splitcoaststampers

I use this method which is from Ikki's Cuttlebug Cupboard. Scroll down to the end of the post to see a tip from someone called Val about another way of doing it. I have done it both ways - it depends on what you find easier, but I prefer the first method.
I always ink the cut edge which hides any imperfections from my hand-cutting, and I have a small, very sharp pair of cuticle scissors set aside for cutting around the curves - I find it easier than using straight-edged scissors but that's just my preference.
Also check our Andrea's World blog where you will see lots of card samples using this method - just scroll down a little to the 18th January & beyond & you will see what I mean with the small border around the main image.

This is exactly what I do, especially with the labels dies because I feel the margin is too large between sizes.

Yes, it is SU's Top Note die. If you look under additional infomation and then accessories, you will see she listed it. It is one die whiich cuts but it has a preforation just smaller. People are trimming it there to make a layer. HTH.
I have many of the label dies (including label eight) and I often create narrow borders using the same sized die. I do this one of two ways. I cut the shape then emboss it and use the embossed line as my cutting line. Or I cut the shape and while the paper is still in the die, I used a pencil to lightly trace along the outline of the die then use that as my cutting guide. Then I cut the shape in the same size of my mat color and mat the trimmed down shape on top of that. If you look in my gallery, you will see a few examples of this.
Very interesting!!!
I few day ago I was on Becca Feccan's Blog..."AmazingPaperGrace" and she had a BEAUTIFUL card, (actually all her work is FANTASTIC!!! I am in AWE!!!) and she had titled it "Tight Borders" (I think) and she said that several people had asked her how she did this and explained (in a video) how she laid the template with blade up and used a craft knife and cut out alone the outer metal edge. It was approx. 1/8 in bigger that the dies actual cut. I was very intrigued and impressed with the precision of using a craft blade.
I for one am seriously craft blade challenged!!! That is why I LOVE DIE CUTTING MACHINES!!!
Blessings,
Valerie
P.S. I am so impressed that so many of you talented crafters can notice minor details like that. That's it!!! No matter how wonderful i think any of my personal creations may be I am never submitting them b/c will pick out every single detail and flaw!!! lol
I wanted it primarily because I wanted it to be safer, but it does have more of a "pen" feel to it. I got mine in the drafting area of a local art supplies house.
I know what you are thaking about I saw it and how to do it on a blog and thought I had bookmarked it but now I can't find it. If I find it I'll let you know
One thing I just used at my neighbor's was an SU! tool that looks like a set of washers, with only a tiny hole in the center for a pencil to go in. You bump it up against the edge of the shape you want to enlarge, and it kind of rolls around the edge as you draw with the pencil in the center. I have no idea what it is called but it is awesome! You still have to cut it out, then, but at least you have the guidelines that are perfectly sized. There are different sizes in the kit. I used to eyeball it like others have said, but this tool would make it that much easier...
PS that blog link above to Ikki's Cuttlebug Cupboard didn't work for me

When I look at this example, I think that the edge is colored with a marker. If you look at the raised embossing, the edges are absolutely perfect- every raised bit is exactly matching. It would take a magician to make two layers on different cardstock, and cut them out to have the embossing perfectly in line like the example. I think this one has coloring running along the perforations.

I do this too with nearly all my dies except the really detailed ones/scalloped.

I am pretty sure you are right. The embossing matches up exactly, but also, in her recipe, she only lists coral and white paper, and turquoise ink. Besides that turquoise mat to the pink heart which looks to be cut out of textured paper, there is no other turquoise on the card. It must be that she colored the edge.
I hand cut my "outer layer" like Kim does. But, my cutting skills leave a LOT to be desired, so I always distress the edges, that way it doesn't matter!
I like to layer my nesties at 1/8" edging, too. Instead of hand cutting or tracing, I just cut the same shape out two to three times. I cut it in half either the long or short width depending on my project and the position/placment of my embellishments. I then adhere to the back of the main die cut shape showing a 1/8th inch frame. Depending on my embellishments this may be enough to sort of fool the eye with a completed frame. If not, I cut another and piece behind the added layer to create the full effect. I think this works okay for me as I am knife and scissor challenged.

Michelle, you are too sweet! I was just looking at my gallery for an example and I really think I faked every layer on card nesties just about. Goodness....I lol at me! When you have as many layers as I cram on a card, I guess some of them have to be faked, huh!?
