I'm looking into some Prismacolor soft core colored pencils. I love my Derwent watercolor pencils, but like the large color selection with Prismacolor. Are the as easy to blend as some of the reviews say? Would my SU blender pen work for that? Thanks!
Blender pens do not blend the prismas. I tried both the SU and the dove blender pens and neither work well with my prismas. As Nancy says, they blend beautifully with odorless mineral spirits for sure.
The SU blender pen won't blend the Premier pencils, but a colorless alcohol marker will work (like a Copic blender). I have a video showing several methods of blending colored pencils - the pencils I use in the video are Faber Castell Polychromos but the same methods work for Prismacolor pencils too.
Dina, doesn't the wax from the pencils damage the tip of the Copic marker? I've always read that if you use both media on a project, you should use the Copics first and then the pencils - for just that reason.
I've been stamping (and coloring) for over 10 years and have never colored images with colored pencils. I recently bought a 12ct tin of prismacolor premier pencils with a coupon to test the waters. I have decided that I really like them and want to buy more. I've also heard a lot of good things about the Derwent Ink tense an am wondering if maybe I should go with those instead. I love rich, intense colors. Maybe I should buy some Derwent's and use them in conjunction with the prismacolors.
What is the minimum number of colors you would choose to have in your collection? I quickly discovered that 12 most definitely isn't enough but I don't want to break the bank with the biggest collection.
Thanks for your help
The rule of thumb for art supplies is to buy the largest set you can afford.
The Inktense pencils can be used dry and do play well with Prismacolors, but their real super power comes through when they are activated with water. If you just bought them to use as a dry coloring medium you would be missing out on soooo many amazing properties. If watercoloring isn't your thing, stick with Prismacolors, or try another high quality brand like Faber-Castell Polychromos. Most colored pencil brands can be purchased in open stock so you can buy a handful of different brands to test and go from there with the one(s) you like best.
I have several articles comparing pencil brands here:
I have used my Prismacolors for many years. Due to the high wax content they blend well with each other. You may also blend them with Gamsol and blender stumps for absolutely wonderful shading results. The SU blender pens work ok but not at the same level. You will get rich colors. But this is an entirely different product than watercolor pencils. The color range is unbelievable. Have fun.
I absolutely love my prismacolour pencils and have used them with OMS since time began! With very little effort you can achieve some amazing results! They are my most favourite colouring medium along with watercolour. See here - SC495 Baby Blue by Mrs Noofy - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers
I LOVE my prisma pencils. I am not great at coloring, but these are so easy to use and I have so much control when using the pencils that sometimes the outcome amazes even me!
My daughter (an artist wanna-be) also loves using them. She combines them a lot with copic markers. I am not good enough to do that, but her stuff looks great.

We've had several discussions lately about colored pencils. As an inexpensive alternative, check these out:

First off, your card is just beautiful!! The colors and blending are so lovely!
I too love to color, and watercolors, Copics, and my Prismacolors with Gamsol make the images look so great. It's fun and relaxing to create, isn't it???
