Default Odorless Mineral Spirits

Hi ladies,

Anyone know if OMS and odorless paint thinner/turpentine are the same thing?

Thanks!

Angela

I do not think they are. I found the O M S at Hobby Lobby yesterday. It is not easy to find!

Turpentine and Odorless Paint thinner are not the same thing. Turpentine is pine based, and the paint thinner is petroleum based. The Odorless Mineral Spirits that people use with colored pencils is probably the same thing as the Odorless Paint Thinner, but it may be a better grade if you buy it at an art store or a craft store like Hobby Lobby or Michaels.

I bought some this week at Michael's. Odorless Paint Thinner is what is on the front of the bottle and in tiny print on the back is "Contains 100% Odorless Mineral Spirits". The only brand Michael's had was Mona Lisa, but I can't imagine there is much difference in brands as long as you are buying an artist's grade.

I've used the Mona Lisa brand for about a year now--no problems. I've hardly made a dent in the big bottle I bought! It's definitely my favorite way to color.

I just got my prismas but I had gotten a can of Gemini oms at HL a year or 2 ago. Tried it out tonight and it works like a charm. Says odorless paint thinner on front and contains 100% mineral spirits on the back. I'm sure this can will last me a lonnnnng time.

I used baby oil and it works fine. There was no oily residue. The lady at M's told me that they also used to use lavender oil from the health food store.

Oh, I bet that smelled lovely! I work for a specialty foods distributor. I'm going to have to check to see if we carry lavender oil now.

Have any of you used the Masterpiece Gemini brand of OMS that they sell at Hobby Lobby? That's what I bought yesterday...

Yes, as a matter of fact, I just tried it out last weekend and it worked like a charm and I truly did not detect any odor. No headache either like I've heard others experience.

Thanks a ton Becky!! I hadnt opened it yet bc I wanted to find someone who had used it to be sure it worked... and that it didn't put out too many fumes... I have asthma, so I still plan to use a fan, but its good to know that you didn't detect anything! I can't wait to try it out!
