HELP? I just bought an older Sizzix Big Shot at a thrift shop yesterday and it did not come with any accessories. I have been researching and I see that it uses a standard platform. I do not have one. Is there any thing else that I can use or a technique as an alternative? Also, any advise, comments would be welcome on where I should look for older parts? TIA. Fran
You can find the Multi Purpose Platform at both Simon Says Stamp or Scrapbook.com. You need the platform and cutting plates, then you can begin cutting dies with it.
Unfortunately while there are a lot of extra accessories for it...one can not do without the basic platform and plates. But before you invest....do you have a friend with one? I would suggest taking it over there and using their platform and plates just to make sure yours works. I can understand the person not donating the plates bc they can be grungy over time but the platform? That is odd to me unless the machine went bad, and they got a new one and kept the platform.
They are on ebay and may also be on etsy and Amazon
I think this is the platform you want for for price comparisons and to see it: .
Also-really important...there are a lot of big shots out there-not all the same. There is the standard but also a Plus, Pro, etc models. So just be careful you don't get the wrong one. Measure your bigshot to see what it the width of the deck. (where you put the platform)...width is generally where they vary.
Hope that helps. You may save some money if you wait for black friday but you may want to use it now.

Margot, often the staff at thrift stores do not manage to put all the pieces of a set together, so it's possible they put the pieces out separately. (Happens a LOT with clothing sets!)
Scanning ebay today, the platforms are available, but you pretty much have to search big shot and then sift through everything to find just the platform.
I use the magnetic platform for the Big Shot and the "B" plates. I can also use a Cuttlebug platform plate with two plates. Perhaps if you find a Cuttlebug platform for dirt cheap, it would be an alternative. I could never get used to using the standard Big Shot platform.
Also, some people use to report going to a hardware store to get them to cut down acrylic plates to size needed. But as stated, search eBay and also the marketplace here.
Amazon sells plates that work in the Big Shot. In fact I have 2 plates in my cart just waiting until I declare my existing plates really need replacing. Like other ladies have mentioned it’s important to know the size of the opening that the plates go into before you invest in plates. My big Shot is an old one that I purchased after my Cuttlebug was not “ cutting it” so to speak. The BigShot still works very well for me and handles intricate die’s and 3D embossing folders. Good luck in finding what you need - it will open up so many more opportunities in card making and it’s fun to use and play with.
I buy clear acrylic cutting pads from Amazon- $2-3 less per pad compared to other places. They are the same size as the Sizzix ones. They come in 4-8 per package. Lots of options for these.
