Default Need Serious Paper Cutter Recommendation

Hi all,
I'm in need of a serious STRAIGHT paper trimmer/cutter. I had a Making Memories Black trimmer for years...loved it, even though the ruler grid was rubbing off, it did cut straight. Then I made the grave mistake of cutting cardboard with it...bad move. I quickly purchased another Making Memories trimmer but the pink one. Bad move again. The ruler grid on the cutting base is off and out of whack as it does not cut a thing straight. I've had it with this brand.

So, I'm anxious to hear recommendations for a trimmer/cutter that has 1/8", 1/4", 1/2", 1" increments on the grid base and no guillotine cutter recommendations, please. I don't think my shoulder can deal with those. Thanks a million!

Have a look at the SU trimmer, it has been on their clearance rack, not sure if they still have them. I bought one decently, having had similar a experiences to you with the Making Memories trimmer. I have been really pleased, though can't remember off the top of my head what the increments are (not at home).

I have the Fiskars Procision trimmer and have been very happy with it. It does not always cut perfectly clean though, but not enough to bother me. Some people are very particular about this. If you can afford it, I would go with a genesis.

The first question is how much do you want to spend. That's usually the answer that takes you in one direction rather than another.

Myself, I have a Bosch guillotine that I got for $10 on Craigslist and a Fiskars slide trimmer with a coupon at Michaels for $10.

The Fiskar's, I don't have a problem with it. The pull out ruler is ok, but I just have to make sure that everything is lined up really well or it will cut crooked. I will say that I change my blades often as they seem to wear out quick, but I use the older blades to cut chipboard so I never let anything including old blades go to waste. I use it more for small things and when I'm not in my studio working.

I know you don't want a guillotine, but I love my guillotine because I can cut anything and everything with it. It's really straight and sharp.... no blade replacements. I have an online friend that has the Fiskar's Procision Rotary Bypass Trimmer. It's about $120, but that's a great paper cutter trimmer. She swears by it.

In the end, it's all about what you want to spend or not spend.

Thank you, everyone for your input...I forgot to mention that I had a Fiskars fold-out cutter years ago and it was okay for an economical, portable trimmer but the blades did wear out. After reading other threads on this, I decided to try the Cutterbug V.3 and bought one on Amazon.com last night. I'm more concerned with the grid on the cutting board being aligned/straight with the cutting edge which MM trimmers seem to have an issue with. This one looks promising...I'll let you know when it comes what I think. It retails for 129.00...so if it delivers as hoped, it will be worth every penny. To me, a trimmer is a major tool of papercrafting and I'm just tired of junk....thanks again.

Of course this is not always true, but sometimes the stock sheet of paper is not straight itself, so when you cut it, any cutter will leave you with a wonkie cut

Did you mean Cutterpillar Pro #3? I have this trimmer and love, love, love it! Cuts like butter and is really accurate. I got mine from 7kidscollegefund.com.

I got the Cutterpillar v3 last August and although it cuts straight all cuts leave the paper feathered along the cut edge. This frustrates me so much. Other than that its a great cutter.
Blessings.

BTW, for anyone else that might be looking for a good (a little pricey) cutter, I saw that Joann's had that Fiskar's Procision Rotary Bypass Trimmer is on sale for 71.99. That's a steal. I would love to have it, but I'm satisfied with what I got. A lot of times if I'm using my pricey papers, I use a straight edge and my craft knife. I get a perfect cut each time. Just a thought to anyone.

I have two cutters; one smaller (Sonic or Onic, I think) guillotine which cuts a sharp edge and is self sharpening. The larger 12x12 Carl rotary (Office Max sells these) needs the blade changed fairly often for the same clean edged cut. I am still thinking about the Genesis though as it cuts through multiple thicknesses without tearing. The Sonic is small and can be hauled around but is not able to cut 12x12 paper.

I bought SU's newest trimmer and love it! It has over a six inch reach before you have to open the arm and it scores too so I cleared a big space off my craft table! I also bought the rotary attachment arm with fancy cutting blades! I never thought I'd find something I would like. Sure glad I was wrong!
