My Christmas project requiring 400 corners rounded prompted me to FINALLY buy the Corner Chomper so many of the cardmaking superstars say they love. At $40 plus postage, my expectation was for easier punching than my rounder punch that has served me so well for about ten years.
My project used 110 lb. cardstock. But I've tried the Chomper on about every weight of paper, from typing paper to corrugated, and the results are the same.....the corner is rounded in the center but sharp at either end of the round. I've carefully followed the directions on the package and still I get a ragged edge on the right side of the round.
You who love this tool, do you do anything but hold the paper against the guides and squeeze the handle? Do you ever have to clean-up the corner after chomping?
I hate the hassle of returning stuff and would surely like to find a way to get clean rounded corners, if there is a way.
Hi Bahb, I bought one of the standard rounders recently, as I always got the same result you are getting with regular corner rounder punches. I used mine this year on all my Christmas cards, ( 200gsm weight), and its worked perfectly. Nice clean rounded corners, and all I did was just push it into the guides & squeeze. I'm guessing you have one that is slightly mis- aligned, especially as it won't punch properly even on copy paper. I'd suggest sending them an e-mail.
As Wanda said, it is critical to get the point right into the corner, other than that, its pretty foolproof.
Please post a picture of the Corner Chomper that you got.
There are several different ones available.
If I could post photos, I would own a blog. I have the Crop-A-
Dile Corner Chomper that cuts 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch round corners and the handles are turquoise, not light blue or green. On the Simon Says shopping site, the handles of the one I ordered look bright green, but that could be a flaw of my computer. I know when people say their card base is purple, it looks brown on my screen.
I just cut the corners of an index card to see that I have the point exactly right when I cut. It's right, but I can move it slighty to either side and I still get the ragged edge where the round ends. I s'pose its more accurate to say "it turns the edge under" where the round ends, rather than cutting it ragged. In any case, I have to clean up after every cut and I don't think that is "normal".
P.S. the price was $30, not $40....I feel better already. :-)

There are black guides on either side of the chomper. They flip back on each side. You need to be sure that they are open all the way, so that your corner can fit completely into the chomper. Could it be that you do not have them completely open?

Yep, that's the original one.
As Bugga says, make sure the guides are fully extended before you start - they'll click into place. Then be sure to insert the corner fully into the "jaws" before you punch. The only time I've had corners that have a slight "step" between the rounded bit and the straight edges, it's because I've been lazy about squaring up the paper properly in the jaws of the punch.
I have seen discussion of people having got a defective Crop-a-Dile before so if you've tried everything and still find it won't work properly, contact We-R-Memory Keepers.
If you do get it working, remember to empty out the waste "bin" regularly since you're doing so many cards - letting that get overfull will mess up your punching faster than anything!

Joanne, you're right about emptying the bin. I also found sometimes little bits of paper stick to the blades, so I kind of tap the tool to be sure they come out too.
My tip about opening the guides comes from experience. I "thought" I opened them, but I didn't push them back far enough, and my corners weren't right.

I emptied the waste bin but found it drops bits more on my work table than in the waste bin. And I got the guides open first thing, since the instructions emphasize to hear two clicks. And I have held the paper every which way(also had to be careful about that with my old rounder), and tried even more types of paper since I began this thread. Nothing changes. So it's to the manufacturer I must go, darnit.
Fortunately I went ahead with my Christmas project and finished the 400 punches without any problem, with my old Rounder. My sister scrapbooked with it for years before giving it to me for cardmaking, so I expected it to be "all used-up" by now.
Many thanks to all you Responders. It's sooooooo wonderful to be able to come here and get answers.
I have exactly the same issue with my corner chomper. Would have returned it to the shop but bought it on a trip so it wasn't feasible. Have consigned it to the 'useless tools' cupboard!
Just watched the video and mine just will not give a perfect corner like that no matter what I do, I have to trim the join between curve and straight with scissors!

I have the same cc as Bahb and mine does not give a perfect corner either and I make sure the wings are completely open, the paper catch is empty, and the paper is inserted correctly. Frustrating. Maybe I have one of the defective ones... I'm off to watch the video.
I'm back and I use it the way she demonstrates. :(
