Default need advice on new SU items I just got

I got the Blender pens because someone told me they are the best to use with the SU pastels....can anyone clue me in as to how to BEST work with the blender pens and pastels? When I do it, it gobs and doesn't look very nice.

I also just got the Embossing Buddy.....how does it work, and when do you use it, before stamping with versamark, or after? Does it work or was that a waste of money?

Thanks!

I don't really use pastels but do know that you should just dab the blender pen on one corner. Dedicate that corner to blender pen usage as it will harden the chalk. The embossing buddy is so worth it and it used when you're doing heat embossing. Before you stamp with Versamark, or whatever, you wipe the paper with the embossing buddy. Then stamp, pour on embossing powder and heat. Voila. The embossing buddy cuts way down on embossing flecks. You might still get some, especially with black.

I LOVE LOVE blender pens w/ chalks!! I use a q-tip to pick up the chalk, apply it to the area, it doesn't have to be all the way to the edge of the image, then blend it w/ the pen!!!

The draw back is that you CANNOT do real fine detail this way but larger images work. If you get a little bit outside the image, just use the eraser that came w/ the chalks and it works great for litte mistake, altho you must erase BEFORE blending!!

HTH!!

I love the blender pens with the chalks also. I use the little wands that come with the chalks, and I can get better detail, apply it to the image, and then use the blender pens. Works great!

I use the blender directly into a designated corner of the chalks to pick up color. Then you can color onto your image just like a watercolor.

You do have to keep going back to the chalk to pick up color. I use the side of the pen tip to pick up the color (instead of the point) so I get more color each time. Just keep scribbling with the pen, and it will blend the color.

The tips can be cleaned simply by scribbling the ends on scratch paper until they color clear. There may still be a little staining, but as long as the coloring is clear, it's good to go.

Remember, too, that the paper you use can make a difference. With light paper, you want to be careful of being too vigorous in coloring. You might wind up "gumming" the paper, as the op mentioned.

For very quick bits, the pen in the corner to pick up color is great. When I do a lot of coloring, though, I like to apply the chalk with the applicators or a cotton swab first, and then blend.

Chalks are my absolute favorite coloring medium, as they are the most forgiving. Make a mistake? The eraser completely removes it.

I wouldn't be without my embossing buddy! Tap and swirl it all around, stamp and pour your embossing powder over the image. All of the excess powder comes off so much easier than when you don't use it. You'll love it. Especially when you use black embossing powder...the WORST for stray flecks!

I have used my blender pen both ways (picking up the chalk from the corner and applying it and then blending). I prefer applying the chalk first unless there is a detailed area that needs smaller application. But I have to say that my favorite technique is to use the blender pen with water color pencils. Easier to apply in tight places than chalk and the blending makes the colors soft and lovely.

I just like to use my blender pens with the color pencils! I've never used them with the chalk! I did notice that they get this "fuzzy" on the end of them, can that be trimmed? and how long do they last?

I was using my blender pens with chalk but didn't like how it would fade really quickly in the area that I was working. So I got a set of Crayola Watercolor pencils and use those with my blender pens and I love it. Plus the crayola's are cheaper than any other watercolor pencils I could find. The more you color on the darker it will be and the lighter, the lighter. So the red can look pink too.

Yeah, I'm still not 100% sold on the Blender pens with the chalk! I guess I need to try it a few more times. I find it makes the paper "gooey" when you go over the chalk with the BP....am I doing it wrong? I have watercolour pencil crayons I bought a few years ago...I'm going to try them too!! So I just colour, then blend with the BP into corners and stuff right?? I think I need a tutorial on how to use them properly!!! Sigh!!!!

I could be wrong, but I think it depends on the kind of watercolor pencils you have. If you have prismacolors, there are lots of threads that explain how to use gamsol with prismacolors.
