Default Marvy Heat tool lead warning

For anyone that has this tool...or for anyone that knows their customers have it...check the site, www.uchida.com.
My downline informed my yesterday that the cord of the heat tool contains lead and Marvy says that it could cause (cancer and) birth defects and to wash your hands after using.
I just emailed my customers because lots of them have purchased the tool from M's because of the coupon, I prefer the SU one hands down.
Sorry if this has been posted before.

And...
the Rob and Bob clips and tool have been recalled due to the fact they contain lead also.

Lovely, and this is the one that I own too! I am going to throw it out and buy the SU one I think.

I don't see anything about the heat tool. Do you have a direct link?

Marvy is responding to Proposition 65, which is a law in California that "was intended by its authors to protect California citizens and the State's drinking water sources from chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm, and to inform citizens about exposures to such chemicals. "

The problem with this proposition, is that includes everyday items, that may not necessarily cause harm. There is a laundry list of chemicals that Proposition 65 includes here - http://www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65/prop6...ngle052005.pdf

Examples of items affected by Proposition 65 (besides the Marvy Heat Tool - not an all inclusive list):
Swarovski Crystals
Lead Crystal (vases, stemware)
Alcohol (as in beverages)
Aspirin
Oral Contraceptives

Whether or not these items cause harm is highly dependent upon the usage of them. Some of this is common sense...ie. you don't want to drink gasoline...but others aren't. Some items are even removed from the list.

Here is a link that explains Proposition 65:
http://www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65/p65faq.html

As far as the Marvy Heat Tool, I'm thinking as long as we don't try to ingest the cords, we should be ok. I have a heat tool that looks very similar to this, by a different company, and I'm sure it has the same issue.

The same warning about lead content is also on strings of Christmas lights. It is used in the wiring to help make it flexible. The real danger is when the light set gets old and the coating might crack or flake. The risk is probably minimal, but certainly something where caution should be used, especially in washing your hands after handling it.

Thanks for the link, Andrea.

The warning states that you should wash your hands after use, it doesn't say anything about ingesting it, probably because it's common sense to not put the cord in an adults mouth.
I know lots of thing we have contain lead and other toxins and if I know exactly what it is, then I choose not to own it.

I just got off the phone with SU and they are going to contact the manufacture of their heat tool to find out if it contains lead also.
They will get back to me.

You also have to remember that Marvy is headquartered in CA so they have to follow Prop 65. I am sure MANY products we all own with power cords fall under this warning, but because the company isn't in CA or we aren't buying them there, we don't see the warnings.

I saw this same warning on an mp3 player at the drugstore the other day. Since I was going to take it to the hospital prior to cancer surgery, I decided no way.

Nah... this stuff is only bad for you if you live in California.

One of my customers told me this a while back. I don't touch mine anymore and I am ordering the su one. The su one has a different type of cord. I will be making sure first that this one doesn't contain lead also. If I find out that su's is lead free, I think my customers will be ditching the Michael's one for an su one.

As I mentioned, I have put in a call to the powers that be at SU and am waiting to find out what they say about our heat tool. When I find out, I will post it.

I have seen this same warning on many different types of cords. The charger for my cell phone has the same warning and as someone else already mentioned-Christmas tree lights do too. I don't think it means other cords don't have lead. This company is just complying with California's stricter labeling laws. What's scary is the lead in products such as children's jewelry which isn't labeled.
