Any suggestions on which dies or embossers to start with? The gallery on splitcoaststampers is show so many great projects! I purchased my machine a couple of months ago and still haven't played with it yet.
:o ?... I'm afraid I'll break it.
I have only embossing folders and the few I started with were: divvine swirls, snowflakes, and a dots one. I just got a few in the mail yesterday, but haven't had time to play. I think it's more personal preference. Swiss dots is one i see used alot.

Don't be afraid of breaking anything. The early B plates had a tendency to crack, but that's been fixed for quite a while now. Just start using it and you'll see how easy it is.
I had my CB for a couple of months before I started using it too. It is easy peasy though and I haven't had any problems with the B plate cracking.
I suggest buying a couple of the older embossing folders first. I use divine swirl and the dotted swiss folders much more than new ones I have because they seem more versatile to me.
But truly, you can't go wrong with buying whichever ones you feel you'll get the most use from.
Cheers!!!

I haven't had any problems with my new CB and I've been buying folders like crazy from our local scrapbook store and crafts direct when I get to St, Cloud.
I did have a slight problem with one of my b plates ...it has a small white mark in it, but it doesn't affect the performance at all.
I love my CB!!!!

Do not be afraid but I know the feeling. I am that way about my Cricut machine.
You might want to check out the videos on www youtube.com. Just type Cuttlebug in the SEARCH. There are a lot that give some really nice ideas and will help you get up the courage to give it a try.
As far as Embossing Folders go, I would suggest Divine Swirls, Swiss Dot Snowflake, Floral Fantasy and the Paisley one. I do not remember the exact name but they seem to only have 1 Paisley. These could be used for many occasions, that's why I suggest starting with those.
Once you see them and what you can do with them, you will want more.
I agree with everyone else it sounds like! I love the swiss dot, I think it is a must have! And the swirls. I also have the one with the tree branch one, which is cute! I just got an A2 combo diecut and embossing set, With Gratitude and it has super cute daisies on the embossing folder! I usually get a great deal at ohmycrafts.
I also have a load of the embossing folders. I think the Swiss dot is completely invaluable plus Birds and Swirls. However, I have just got the village scene Christmas folder which is just gorgeous too. However at the end of the day, if you really like a design, you will use it, so just choose what you like.
The videos on YouTube are great. Found more than just CuttleBug...who would have thought that you could learn so much from YouTube!. I've been doing a lot of surfing there lately. Thanks. Con.

I got my Cuttlebug recently too..I just got the 2x2 vintage dies to do some cool corners..I've also used the swiss dots and leafy branch and the border embossing ones called Just my Type..It's so much fun...looks very cool and people are really impressed when I show them something made with these.
I have the big kick machine and love all the dies and folders. Makes embossing a snap. You do need to be cautious about how thick you make your plate "sandwich" or you can break things. If you have never used it before start with the thinnest "sandwich" run through machine and see if it has embossed enough, if not add another piece or a shim , cereal boxes work great for making shims. You should feel some resistance when you crank it through but if it seems too hard stop and make your layer thinner. My machine came with an overall guide but I still found I had to experiment on my own to find the " just right" thickness.
Since the Holidays are coming why don't you get some of the Holiday ones and definitely the Swirls and Swissdot one. This will give you a good selection to get hooked on and believe me you will get hooked!!!
Well I finally used my machine. I figured out how to use my Fiskar plates. And the other day I had someone show me how to cut with it. I used the dots, scales, swirls, and foot/hand print. The embossing was so easy! Once in a while the plates slip before I can get it on the machine but that was OK...I just had to slow down ;) . I'm making baby shoe ornaments for my daughter's baby shower. Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions. You all were terrific inspiration!!! -Con :-D

I got my CB about 6 weeks ago with a 55% off ACMoore coupon (and no tax from being in NH), and I fed so many different kinds of things through it. I came to the conclusion that if the item was 1/8" thick or less and flat on at least one side, then it could go through. I even tried the laser cut wood pieces (like a wooden ornament you might paint that you find in Mike's or ACMoore at times), and some actually came out pretty cool. Also, don't forget flat brass word ornaments. I tried shaped buttons (like a skeleton or pumpkin), but that didn't work out well. Clear stamps don't work either. They needed to have a firm design. I should have realized that before I tried it. Oh well--live and learn.
With new or untried objects, you will have to use some caution. You obviously don't want to force anything.
