There is a set from Bic that is about $19 and I think there are threads in the Tools section were people talk about how to use them and their results. HTH.
Some people use the Bic Mark Its and the Sharpie sets. I believe you can get both from Target, if there is one near you. I got my Bic Mark Its at Target-a set of 36 colors for about $18 or $19. :-D
Have you tried the Bic Mark-its? They are alcohol based like the Copics but are much cheaper (they are basically Sharpies with bigger tips). I have them and they blend nicely. They aren't too expensive and are carried in places like Target.
How about watercolor pencils? I have the Derwent brand (bought at Michaels with a coupon). You can buy a set and/or individual pencils.
Watercolor crayons are another nice option. I bought a set of Staetler (at Hobby Lobby with a coupon).
Here are some examples of these coloring techniques from my gallery.
When I see samples online I often make the mistake of assuming they are done with Copics when they are actually colored pencils blended with odorless paint thinner (or baby oil). In other words, you can get a very similar final effect using what you already have.
With the on-line price match, the coupon and the rebate, you can get a 36 pack of Bic Mark-its for only 4.99 + tax.

I have used Sharpies for years and always loved the results. AC Moore and Michaels has a display where you can get them individual with a ton of different color options. Last night I bought my first few Prismacolor markers and I love love them. The peach is perfect for coloring Santa's face for me.
I am not sure I will change to Copics for a very long time. I am lucky tho there is not a local store for me to try them, it helps cool the temptations. ;)
I just got some alcohol markers by Blick studio. They are only 1.69 a piece and work just like the prismacolor markers which are about twice that price. I chose the colors that looked like the SU colors that I like. And I got the colorless blender too.
Here is a wonderful product for coloring images. They are pearlescent watercolors. You get 16 great colors for only $4.95. I have them and just love them. You can use them in combination with markers for shading and get a great result:

I also love the Sharpies and Bics. Then I've used a coupon to buy a couple of individual Copics and Prismacolors in pastel colors.
Like others have said, the Sharpies and Bics are really bright vibrant colors. I got the other (expensive) markers to fill in and use with the Sharpies and Bics. They work really well together, too.

I just purchased a few of the Blick Studio markers because I cannot afford the copics right now. I have some of the prismacolors and since it was mentioned earlier that the blick studio ones are like the prismacolors I figured it was worth a try since they are about half the price of the copics and prismas
I have the bic mark it markers too. I got them at staples for $20 with a $10 rebate so I only ended up paying $10! They are permanent markers though so they aren't going to work for multi-coloring on stamps (at least they didn't work for me). They are great for coloring in stamped images though.
I am going to be buying the SU marker pack soon too because they are just so versatile. I have been wanting them for a long time so I am starting a marker club with them in January.
Gina K designs has wonderful pencils on her site, and on the cruise we used some great pencils with Stampingbella. They are pencils, not markers, but the coloring was wonderful with both products!
